Fermo sits on Colle Sabulo at about 320 metres above sea level and around six kilometres from the sea. The town and its coastline offer different focuses for your trip: historic places in the town or stretches of beach with golden sand and smooth white pebbles. When planning your hotel stay, consider how much time you would like to spend on the sights and how much on the coastal area.

Art and history in the town

Piazza del Popolo is the heart of Fermo. Sixteenth-century brick arcades frame the square, which is also home to the town’s oldest public buildings. Markets and gatherings take place beneath the arcades, which also invite you to enjoy a leisurely stroll. In this way, Piazza del Popolo combines historic architecture with a public space used for everyday activities.

The cathedral offers a different architectural contrast: its façade is Romanesque-Gothic, while the interiors are predominantly Neoclassical. Visitors can also see the foundations of an early Christian basilica and an eighteenth-century crypt. As visiting arrangements may change, it is advisable to check them before your visit.

The Museo Diocesano is next to the cathedral, in the former premises of the dissolved Confraternita del Suffragio. Among the objects on display is a chasuble of Arab workmanship that had belonged to Saint Thomas Becket. The museum also preserves the Messale de Firmonibus, a codex illuminated by Giovanni di Ugolino da Milano in 1436. In the art gallery, the arrangement across two floors helps visitors place works in chronological context: panels from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries hang downstairs, while canvases from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries are upstairs.

Other collections offer different points of interest. The Sala del Mappamondo in Palazzo dei Priori houses a wooden globe drawn by Abbot Amanzio Moroncelli in 1713. Palazzo Paccaroni is home to the Museo Polare “Silvio Zavatti” and the Museo di Scienze Naturali “Tommaso Salvadori.” The Biblioteca Civica Romolo Spezioli has a history spanning three centuries; its holdings include 3,000 manuscripts, 127 codices and 300,000 documents.

Churches, stages and events

Those interested in religious architecture will find further distinctive examples. Chiesa di San Francesco is a fifteenth-century Gothic church. It houses the funerary monument to Euffreducci, created by Andrea Sansovino in 1527. A fresco decoration in the chapel to the right of the main chapel is attributed to Giuliano; it depicts an Annunciation, a Coronation of the Virgin and other fragments. The Oratorio di Santa Monica, meanwhile, is entirely decorated with fifteenth-century frescoes depicting stories of Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Evangelist.

Teatro dell’Aquila opened in 1791 and has since been restored several times. Its annual programme includes opera, music, drama and events for younger audiences; the performances on offer depend on the season. Another historic tradition is the Cavalcata dell’Assunta: the procession makes its way through the town streets on the evening of 14 August and the afternoon of 15 August. Check the programme for the relevant edition during your travel dates.

For urban art, FUM offers a route to the town’s murals. The open-air museum also includes workshops and labs in a multidisciplinary space; its cultural programme may evolve. Parco del Girfalco, a green space surrounding the cathedral, offers panoramic views over Fermo. The two places offer different experiences: FUM leads visitors to urban art, while the park combines green space with views.

The coast and cuisine as further travel highlights

Along the Fermo coast, beaches with golden sand alternate with stretches of smooth white pebbles. Sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing are practised in places such as Lido di Fermo, Casabianca and Marina Palmense. The availability of these activities may vary depending on the season and the provider. If you are planning a day on the coast, check the conditions for the activity in advance.

The traditional cuisine of the Fermo area also offers distinctive names for your menu: these include Ciauscolo sausage and strongly flavoured local cheeses. Vincisgrassi and Maccheroncini di Campofilone are staples of the pasta tradition. The products and dishes available locally may vary by season and restaurant. TipicitĂ , an established umbrella brand, brings together themes such as Food & Wine, the TipicitĂ  Experience and the craftsmanship of Art&Genius; details of events and programmes may change with each edition.
