If you’re looking for a hotel in Rotella, the focus of your trip can help you get your bearings: would you like to explore historic architecture and sacred art, or assess a route by activity type and elevation gain? The area’s highlights include buildings and works of art, as well as hiking and cycling routes.

Churches, a tower and sacred art

In the town centre stands the imposing 15th-century Torre dell’Orologio. The Chiesa Collegiata dei SS. Maria e Lorenzo is a single-nave Baroque church, built in 1767 to a design by Lazzaro Giosafatti. “Single-nave” describes its basic spatial layout, while its construction date and Baroque style place it in a particular historical and architectural context. There are no architectural barriers at the church entrance.

The church houses a 15th-century polychrome terracotta Pietà. “Polychrome” describes its multicoloured finish, while terracotta is the material; the Pietà places the work in a religious art context. The Museo Ciccolini – Museo d’arte sacra offers further connections to sacred art: the museum preserves numerous reliquaries. These include a reliquary of San Fortunato dating from 1509, attributed to the artist Pietro Paolo de Aurificis. A 17th-century statuette of the Apostle Peter can also be seen there. The reliquary and statuette thus represent different types of objects and periods.

Other sacred sites are named beyond these two buildings. The 11th-century Chiesa del Verdiente stands in Contrada Icone. In Contrada Torbidello, in a small clearing at the foot of Monte Ascensione, is the Santuario della Madonna della Consolazione, also known as Montemisio. Together with the collegiate church and the clock tower, the buildings mentioned here span a period from the 11th to the 18th century.

Hiking and cycling routes

The trekking route “Da Rotella al Monte Ascensione” is graded E and has a stated elevation gain of 708 m. The “Anello Meridionale del Monte dell’Ascensione” is a cycling route, also graded E, with an elevation gain of 335 m. The figures distinguish the stated elevation gains, while the routes are assigned to different activity types.

Another trekking route is the “Cappuccini – Tappa 15” stage. It runs from Montefalcone Appennino to Rotella and is graded E. The stage is listed as 21 km long, with an elevation gain of 500 m. Its explicitly stated course therefore differs from the “Da Rotella al Monte Ascensione” route: Rotella is the destination of the Cappuccini stage, while the other route names Rotella as its starting point. Check the route details locally before setting off.

Culinary connections and getting your bearings

The culinary highlights of the “Percorsi Sibillini Romantici” include truffles, Rosa apples and Marroncino. They offer another theme for planning your trip alongside the sacred buildings and routes. There are also routes and trails in GPX format in the municipality of Rotella.
