Genga combines a striking cave landscape with hiking trails, cultural collections and activities involving specific physical challenges. When looking for a hotel in Genga, caves, trails and museums can shape the focus of your stay. The experiences differ considerably: the Grotte di Frasassi showcases distinctive stalactite and crystal formations, the Sentiero dell’Aquila offers insights into nature and local history, while Speleo Avventure involves climbing and crawling sections.

Caves and Speleo Avventure

The Grotte di Frasassi complex features magnificent stalactites, enormous stalagmites and flowing crystal formations. These geological features define the cave complex. On the tourist route through the caves, visitors with reduced mobility can access the route as far as the start of the second chamber, the “Room 200.” Check the conditions before your visit.

Speleo Avventura Azzurro lasts about two hours, requires a reservation and includes short climbing sections, crawling stretches, narrow passages and slides. The duration is approximate; confirm the reservation conditions in advance. Speleo Avventura Rosso includes the 30-metre-deep “Falconara well,” a 30-metre section to be traversed on hands and knees, and a ten-metre climb through a slippery tunnel.

Hiking Trails and Local History

The Sentiero dell’Aquila is an approximately seven-kilometre circular route along the peaks on the northern side of the Gola di Frasassi. At six rest stops, ten information panels cover flora, fauna, geology, and historical and architectural features. The trail connects the hamlets of Pierosara, Cerqueto, Rosenga and Vallemania. This brings landscape themes together with information about the area’s history and architecture along the same route.

Part of the trail’s history also goes back a long way: from the 10th century onward, this section connected the area around San Vittore delle Chiuse and the Castaldato of Castel Petroso, now Pierosara, with the Castello di Genga. It passed through Rosenga and Vallemania. This historic connection applies to part of the Sentiero dell’Aquila.

Another destination is the Sentiero del Foro degli Occhialoni near Pierosara in Genga. It leads to two openings overlooking the gorge. The initially easy trail becomes steeper and more difficult as you go. Check local conditions before setting out; the character of the trail changes along the route.

Museums and Historic Sites

The Museo Speleopaleontologico e Archeologico was established to preserve an ichthyosaur fossil discovered in 1976 in Camponocecchio, within the municipality of Genga. The Museo di Genga – Arte, storia e territorio houses restored works of art that were previously kept in the historic church of San Clemente. The two museums therefore have different focuses: one on a fossil discovery and its preservation, the other on restored art from a historic church collection.

The Eremo Santa Maria Infra Saxa, also known as the Santuario della Madonna di Frasassi, is documented from 1029. It was later used as a cloistered monastery run by Benedictine nuns. Alongside the collections and hiking trails, religious history is another theme that can shape a stay in Genga.

Getting There by Car

You can reach the Grotte di Genga e Frasassi area from Ancona by car via the SS76 in about an hour. Journey time depends on traffic; treat this approximate estimate as a guide when planning your trip.
