Semiana: Rice Cultivation and Historic Buildings
Accommodation in Semiana
Semiana brings together historic buildings with connections to agriculture and rural life. These include the Castello di Semiana, several churches and La Casa del Contadino, a reconstructed farmhouse in a museum space. Architecture, church history and agricultural life thus stand alongside one another as distinct themes.
Rice Cultivation and Getting Around
Rice cultivation is Semiana’s main agricultural activity. The village is also listed on the “The rice Weeders’ route” (Itinerario 05). If you include this route in your plans, check the latest route details in advance.
For access, Semiana is on Strada Provinciale No. 5. This road branches off from the Pavia–Alessandria road at Lomello and leads via Valle Lomellina and Candia Lomellina to Casale Monferrato. As road conditions can change, check the route before setting off.
Architectural History and Churches
The Castello di Semiana is an elegant stately palace dating from the 17th century, with a rectangular floor plan. Built of exposed brick, it features an ornate entrance portal. Its architecture can therefore be considered from several perspectives: the building’s form, the materials used and the design of the entrance.
The Chiesa Santi Ippolito e Cassiano is a parish church in the Diocese of Vigevano. Construction began in the 16th century, when a chapel in the old cemetery was enlarged. Another historical reference: the church of Sant’Ippolito in Semiana is recorded in the tithe registers of the Diocese of Pavia for 1322–1323. These details point to two distinct historical reference points: the 1322–1323 register entry and the enlargement beginning in the 16th century.
The Chiesa Santissima Trinità is not accessible. Inside, a trompe-l’œil ceiling painted with geometric motifs has been preserved. According to local chronicles, the church was rebuilt in Baroque forms in 1652. Trompe-l’œil refers to an illusionistic painting technique that creates the impression of spatial depth; here, the geometric motifs are a specific feature of the ceiling.
Rural Life
La Casa del Contadino is an old farmhouse reconstructed in a museum space. It includes furnishings and tools from the early 20th century. Visitors are expected to contact the owner in advance to arrange a visit.
Agriturismo Cascina Corte Grande offers a different focus: equipment, furnishings and objects from the daily life of a farming family have been restored and returned to use there. The two examples offer different perspectives on rural life: La Casa del Contadino places the reconstructed house at the center, while Cascina Corte Grande focuses on restored everyday objects and equipment.
