Garbagnate Milanese: Nature, Culture and History
Accommodation in Garbagnate Milanese
Garbagnate Milanese offers two clearly distinct themes to help you plan your stay: the natural setting of Parco delle Groane and a cultural heritage of museums, churches and a historic cinema. In the park, oak forests, Scots pines and trails take centre stage; the cultural sites span everyday rural history, sacred architecture and memories preserved in media. You can shape your trip around whichever of these themes interests you most.
Parco delle Groane
Parco delle Groane is a regional protected area established in 1976. Protected oak forests and Scots pines shape its landscape. The park's cycle network covers about 50 kilometres. This distance refers to the entire network, not to a single route. Parco delle Groane is also accessible from the railway station.
Within the park, Laghetto della Fametta is a centre for sport fishing. There is also a restaurant and a bar at the lake. Alongside the forest and cycle network, visitors will therefore find a dedicated sport-fishing area and food and drink options.
The Percorso Botanico
The Percorso Botanico dell’ex ospedale di Garbagnate M.se is a two-kilometre trail near the old hospital in Garbagnate Milanese, located directly alongside a cycle path. It is divided into the sections Learning, Getting to Know and Exploring. The two kilometres of this trail and the approximately 50 kilometres of cycle routes in Parco delle Groane describe different things: a named route on the one hand, and a network of routes on the other.
Museums and Local History
The Museo di Siolo is housed in restored rooms at Cascina Siolo. Its permanent exhibition is devoted to farming tools and kilns. Its sections cover fieldwork, silkworm raising, the farmhouse, courtyard, farmyard, stable and kilns. The objects represent the material and rural culture of Garbagnate and the Alto Milanese in the 19th and 20th centuries. In this way, specific areas of work are presented within a broader regional and historical perspective. Visits to the Museo di Siolo are available on request or as part of scheduled events, and require a reservation.
The Museo Diffuso di Garbagnate preserves oral memories through audio documents and video interviews; written documents and images are also digitised. Unlike the object-based exhibition in Siolo, it focuses on memories and the media through which they are preserved. The Cinema Teatro Italia adds another cultural dimension as a historic cinema and theatre in Garbagnate Milanese.
Churches and Architectural Forms
The Santuario della Beata Vergine del Rosario is a longitudinal church with three naves and side chapels. Its construction spanned the 16th century to the mid-20th century. The Basilica SS. Eusebio e Maccabei was built in 1940 and is located in the centre. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross and includes three naves. This allows two different architectural forms to be compared: the longitudinal church with side chapels and the basilica with a Latin-cross floor plan. A smaller, wheelchair-accessible entrance is located on the right-hand side of the basilica.
