Stagno Lombardo: Nature on the Po and Architectural History
Accommodation in Stagno Lombardo
Stagno Lombardo is shaped by the Po and a landscape of bodri, floodplains and drainage canals. It also offers paths for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as several cultural and historical landmarks. If you are looking for a focus for your trip, you will find both nature and riverside scenery, as well as routes and architectural history here.
Landscape and Nature on the Po
Stagno Lombardo borders the Po and the extensive Lanca di Cascina Ferrara along a considerable stretch. The landscape includes the Bodri del Lazzaretto and di Gerre del Sole, as well as the winding Fossadone drainage canal. In the wider area, the Parco del Po e del Morbasco extends across the Po floodplain; the park’s drainage canals include the Morbasco, Cerca and Morta. The landscape can therefore be understood through both individual wetlands and waterways and the wider floodplain.
The Bodrio delle Gerre di Stagno Lombardo is a small natural area on the Po floodplain and has been designated a natural monument under Lombardy’s nature conservation law. Its wet woodland communities are mainly characterised by Robinia pseudoacacia and Salix alba, alongside shrubs and rare pedunculate oaks. There are observation points for local wildlife and information boards at the Bodrio delle Gerre. The kingfisher has nested there for several years. For nature enthusiasts, the main attractions include specific features of the vegetation, as well as wildlife and information available on site.
Walking and Cycling Routes
A route along the Cavo Morta can be followed on foot or by bicycle. In Stagno Lombardo, it runs along the riverbank through natural riverside habitats. The “Tra pievi, bodri e Morbasco” circular cycling route extends as far as Stagno Lombardo. The two routes therefore offer different features to consider: the Cavo Morta route follows the riverbank and can be travelled on foot or by bicycle, while “Tra pievi, bodri e Morbasco” is a circular cycling tour that reaches Stagno Lombardo.
Architectural History and Local Landmarks
Cascina Alluvioni is a notable landmark in the area’s architectural history. This agricultural complex comprises a farmstead, a manor house, a courtyard, a private chapel and a historic orangery. The estate belonged to the Germani family until the end of the 19th century. Cascina Alluvioni is currently considered to be completely derelict and at risk of collapse. This warning is crucial for your planning; do not treat the complex as a safe place to visit.
The parish church in Stagno Lombardo is dedicated to Saints Nazarius and Celsus. The Polimeridiana is located on the embankment in Stagno Lombardo. These local landmarks have different points of interest: the parish church’s religious dedication and the Polimeridiana’s location on the embankment.
