If you would like to take architectural history and local festival traditions into account when choosing a destination, Casteldidone offers several specific points of interest. These include the Church of Saints Abdon and Sennen, Villa Mina della Scala, Cascina Cavalca, and two festivals with specifically dated events.

Architecture and History in Casteldidone

The Church of Saints Abdon and Sennen was built around 1840 over an older church dating from the 15th century. Its Neoclassical structure has a Latin cross floor plan and a single nave. A large dome with a skylight and three side chapels on each side shape the interior layout. The building was designed by Luigi Voghera; vague Palladian influences can be seen on the façade.

Villa, or Castello, Mina della Scala was built at the end of the 16th century and subsequently remodelled several times. The complex includes the Oratory of Sant’Antonio, dating from 1680. At the Castello, a project features theatrically staged guided tours. It follows a seasonal operating model; check the current dates before planning your trip.

Cascina Cavalca developed from the conversion of Casteldidone’s old castle. In 1309, the old castle was described as a village surrounded by a defensive moat, with a fortified tower. The upper part of the Cascina preserves remnants of the castle tower. On the eastern side is a cornice dating from the 15th century. While the villa dates to the late 16th century, the history of the Cascina goes back through the old castle to an earlier building phase.

Villa, or Castello, Mina della Scala is located on the road between Rivarolo Mantovano and San Giovanni in Croce, opposite Casteldidone. There is also a specific connection for cycling trips: the regional cycling tour “Nelle Terre tra Oglio e Po” leads to the villa, which is one of the route’s attractions. If you are planning the cycling trip, check the route conditions before setting off.

Festivals and Culinary Traditions

The Sagra del Marubino in Casteldidone was scheduled for 18 to 26 August 2023. The event centred on marubino, a traditional meat-filled tortellino prepared in three broths. At the Sagra, it was made according to a traditional recipe by experienced hands. The Sagra received the “Sagra di Qualità” award from UNPLI at the Senate of the Republic.

Another culinary connection is melon cultivation: in 1958, a farming family from Viadana introduced this crop to Casteldidone for the first time; it had not previously been grown in the area. The two connections are distinct: marubino centres on a dish prepared traditionally, while the melon connection marks the start of cultivation in a specific year.

The patron saint’s feast in honour of Saints Abdon and Sennen was scheduled for 30 July 2025. The Persian martyrs are the town’s patron saints. Religious celebrations with a procession, as well as traditional secular and social events for the whole community, were planned for this date. If you are planning to attend a later edition, check its date.
