Churches and Historic Traces

The Chiesa di San Pietro features simple Romanesque-style architecture. Frescoes from the late 15th and 16th centuries are still visible inside the church. This place thus brings together restrained architectural design and preserved artwork from two different periods. Those interested in the connection between architecture and historic art will find a tangible way to explore Coccaglio’s cultural history here.

The Pieve di S. Giovanni Battista is located within the walls of Coccaglio’s medieval castrum. It can be visited by contacting the parish priest. Parts of the medieval defensive wall and drawbridge have also been preserved in the historic center. Other historic landmarks include the Roman castrum dating to the 1st century BC and Coccaglio’s medieval castle, of which the base of the main tower survives.

The Parrocchia S. Maria Nascente represents a later phase of construction. It was built in the first decades of the 18th century, based on a design by architect Antonio Corbellini. Taken together, the Romanesque-influenced Chiesa di San Pietro, the medieval traces and this church building illustrate different aspects of the town’s history.

Museum and Cultural Events

The Museo d’Arte Orientale – Collezione Mazzocchi houses a collection of Japanese artifacts dating from the 16th to the 18th century. It is divided into four thematic sections. Both the objects’ dates and their thematic arrangement provide starting points for exploring the collection. By prior arrangement, the museum can organize guided tours and private visits, workshops and educational activities.

Performances, exhibitions, public meetings and film screenings are held at the Auditorium S. Giovanni Battista. Its program spans stage and film events as well as exhibitions and meetings. If you are interested in a specific date, plan your visit around the relevant event schedule.

Trails, Cycling and Green Spaces

The Sentiero delle Croci leads to the summit and the Croce di Coccaglio. The Sentiero via Piè di Monte is one of the more challenging hiking trails on Monte Orfano. Based on the available information, the two routes can be distinguished as follows: the summit and cross are named as the destination of one, while the other is described as more challenging. Guided tours of the Parco Geologico del Montorfano can be arranged with the Gruppo Speleo.

Parco San Pietro lies at the foot of Monte Orfano. Its green space has slides, swings and activity equipment for children, with a particular focus on outdoor play.

Pianora Azienda Agricola in Montorfano Coccaglio offers visits and wine tastings by prior arrangement. Contacting them in advance is therefore part of planning a visit or tasting. The Pieve and the museum’s offerings also have their own stated contact requirements.
