Acquafredda between museum and local history

In Acquafredda, cultural themes range from rural life to church architecture and public remembrance. One specific landmark is Palazzo Bonzi: built in 1667, the building now houses the municipal administration. The Museo della civiltà rurale is located in the attic. Palazzo Bonzi is the former palace of the Counts Bonzi, so its historical name and its present-day municipal function come together here.

Rural culture at the Museo della civiltà rurale

The Museo della civiltà rurale displays around 500 catalogued objects across four large rooms. The collection is divided into six areas: farming, forestry and pastoral activities; domestic economy and rituals; crafts; hunting and fishing; trade and public services; and educational activities. The range of topics thus extends from work and household life to schools and public services. The four rooms describe the exhibition, while the six categories show how it is organised thematically. These are two different ways to find your bearings: you can explore the collection by room or by subject, and, for example, consider themes of work and crafts alongside everyday life, rituals or schooling.

Palazzo Bonzi and church architecture

Palazzo Bonzi itself also offers a specific architectural point of comparison. Its portico has five arches, and the loggia on the first floor also has five arches. The same number links the two architectural features, although they are in different parts of the building.

The Chiesa di San Biagio Vescovo e Martire is a former parish church in the centre of Acquafredda, a municipality in the province of Brescia in the eastern Bassa Bresciana. Its façade is neoclassical. Inside, a barrel vault, columns, Corinthian capitals and painted wall decoration shape the space. The Chiesa di San Bernardino da Siena, by contrast, is notable for its place in local history and its bell tower: the church was built within the castrum, in the oldest part of Acquafredda, now called Castello. It is thought to date from the late 15th century; its bell tower dates from the 16th century. These dates therefore refer to different parts and periods.

Remembrance and the Funzione d'Ottobre

The Monumento ai caduti was inaugurated on 24 April 1921. It is shaped like an obelisk and features marble and bronze elements, as well as reliefs. It can therefore be understood both through its appearance and its inauguration date.

The Funzione d'Ottobre is considered Acquafredda's most important traditional event. For the 2024 edition, the municipality organised an extensive programme of cultural, sporting and leisure activities dedicated to local history, traditions and community. This edition illustrates the event's range without setting out a programme for other dates. If you would like to plan your trip around a specific activity, check the announced dates.
