Vigolo: Mountain Village, Churches and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Vigolo
Vigolo brings together a compact mountain village center, sacred art and hiking trails to Monte Bronzone. When planning your stay, you can choose from a range of options: the cobbled lanes and churches in the village, views of the lake and valley, and routes with their own starting points and courses.
Village Character and Views
Rustic houses define the compact village center. The cobbled lanes rise and fall, while passageways beneath arcades add to the village’s character. You can also get to know Vigolo through its physical layout: paths through the village pass buildings at varying elevations, rather than presenting a uniform streetscape.
Vigolo’s Big Bench offers views of the historic village center, Lake Iseo and the valley toward Monte Bronzone. The panoramic terrace of the Madonna di Loreto sanctuary offers a different perspective, with views of the lake. The viewpoints therefore offer different highlights: the Big Bench overlooks the village, lake and valley, while the terrace focuses on the lake view.
Churches, Frescoes and History
Vigolo’s parish church of Santa Maria Assunta houses paintings by A. Cifrondi and frescoes by U. Mirigliani and T. Poloni. Its furnishings also include a black marble altar created by the Bottega dei Manni di Rovio. The works and their attributions give the church a distinctive art-historical focus.
The church of San Rocco has a precious altar dedicated to Saint Anthony. It was built after the plague of 1630 as a gesture of thanks that the village had been spared from the epidemic. Several points of interest come together at the Madonna di Loreto sanctuary, also known as Madonna del Dosso: it was built in 1834, has frescoes and features a panoramic terrace overlooking the lake. This lets you consider artworks, architectural history and views as different aspects of a visit to Vigolo.
Hiking Trails with Different Routes
A hike to the summit of Monte Bronzone starts in the village center and in the meadows of Vigolo. Views along the way include Lake Iseo, Monte Isola, Corna Trentapassi and Monte Guglielmo. The Sentiero Vigolo–Colle Cargadura, by contrast, starts at an elevation of 620 meters above the parking area by the town hall. From there, the old mule track climbs toward Recursone. The trail passes through a spruce forest planted more than a century ago; in the valley, the landscape is shaped by traditional mountain farming practices focused on preservation.
The two descriptions offer different details to help plan your hike: the Monte Bronzone route emphasizes its start in the village and the viewpoints, while the Sentiero Vigolo–Colle Cargadura highlights its elevated starting point, mule track and forest. A route from Bratta di Vigolo to Monte Bronzone reaches Colle Cargadura at an elevation of 1,022 meters. The pass lies on the ridge separating Val di Vigolo from Val Fonteno.
The Percorso Giallo first follows trail 704 toward Giabella, then trail 724 to Monte Saresano and Pozza Alta. It then follows trail 701 back toward Vigolo. Vigolo 360 is a complete trekking route across the hills of Vigolo: it passes Baita Gombo Alto and returns to the starting point along the opposite side of the valley. The Baita is on the northern slopes of Monte Bronzone within the municipality of Vigolo and is part of a network of trails connecting Vigolo with Monte Bronzone and the area’s main ridges.
The Strada Verde can also be identified by its route details: the 58-kilometer trail connects Vigolo with Tavernola Bergamasca and the Valle di Adrara. It includes a two-kilometer section on unpaved terrain, suitable for experienced hikers and initially involving steps. Trail conditions and markings may change; check them before setting out.
A Look at Cheese-Making
A visit to Latteria Bronzone shows how milk is made into cheese and other dairy products. These include Stracchino Bronzone, ricotta, yogurt and formagelle. The tour ends with a tasting of the products served on a platter, accompanied by a glass of Franciacorta. If you would like to include this activity in your plans, check the available dates for your visit in advance.
When looking for a hotel in Vigolo, the focus of your stay can help guide your choice: the churches and village character offer a cultural highlight, while hiking plans can be distinguished by their starting points, routes and landscapes. Views of Lake Iseo and the described trails to Monte Bronzone add specific destinations to consider when planning your day.
