Cavernago: Churches and Architectural History
Accommodation in Cavernago
If you are looking for a hotel in Cavernago, its historic sites provide a clear focus for planning your trip. The Chiesa di San Marco is in Cavernago; several of the architectural and landscape features described, however, are associated with the place name Malpaga. The churches can be compared by their construction dates and architecture, while Castello di Malpaga is also part of a park and landscape setting.
Chiesa di San Marco in Cavernago
Count Francesco Martinengo had the Chiesa di San Marco built in 1605; it was consecrated in 1622. The building is a single-nave structure in the late Renaissance style. Distinctive details include the Serliana window and the sandstone portal bearing the coat of arms of the Martinengo Colleoni family. The church was consecrated 17 years after it was built.
Works by V. A. Orelli from 1772 are kept in the adjoining Oratorio della Congregazione. The works kept in the adjoining oratory date from considerably later than the church’s construction and consecration.
The church in Malpaga in comparison
The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista in Malpaga has a different architectural history: Colleoni had it built around 1460. It is a typical single-nave church in the Lombard Gothic style and preserves a valuable high altar from 1645. This makes the church about 145 years older than San Marco in Cavernago; 1645 is the date of the high altar, not the construction of the building. Both churches have a single nave, but differ in their style and date of construction. Single-nave means that the church interior has one main nave; the style designation, by contrast, describes its architectural classification.
Castello di Malpaga and the park landscape
Castello di Malpaga lies within Parco del Serio and overlooks 300 hectares of agricultural fields within Parco del fiume Serio. Because of its historical, architectural, and artistic significance, it is considered one of the most important Lombard buildings of the 15th century. At Malpaga, two perspectives come together: the significance of the historic building and its relationship to the park and surrounding agricultural land. The figure of 300 hectares gives this landscape setting a concrete scale.
Trip-planning information
For orientation by car, the information about the Seriate exit on the A4 refers to Castello di Cavernago, which is nearby. Castello di Malpaga is located by reference to its position in Parco del Serio and the agricultural land. These different points of reference help distinguish the similarly named castles; the churches, in turn, can be differentiated by their construction dates and styles.
