Azzano San Paolo is near the airport area and the city of Bergamo. These are two geographical points of reference to consider when choosing a hotel. The key is which stops on your trip are most important to you. The town’s history, churches, and parks also offer specific themes around which you can plan your stay in Azzano San Paolo.

Local History and Historic Churches

The municipality is believed to be of Roman origin. The first settlement developed near the present-day “Chiesa vecchia”; the historic settlement area is still called “castello” today. These references point to different aspects of local history: Roman origins refer to the municipality, “castello” to the historic settlement area, and the Chiesa vecchia to the location of the first settlement. Together, they provide different points of reference for understanding the town’s historical development.

The Chiesa di Sant’Anna, also known as the “Church of the Dead,” was built after the plague of 1630. An existing small chapel was incorporated into it. Two details are important for placing the church in time: it was built after the plague, and the chapel was already there. Its alternative name is also part of the church’s history.

The Chiesa di San Paolo is located in the historic center. Its floor plan comprises three aisles: the central nave is wider than the narrower, lower side aisles. These are covered by vaults decorated with stucco and paintings. The interior layout can be described in terms of its proportions and features: the central space is broader, while the side areas are lower and have decorated vaults. In 1705, the central nave was extended and remodeled in Baroque forms. The combination of the spatial layout and the dated renovation offers a way to explore the church’s architectural history.

The Chiesa della Conversione di San Paolo is considered a distinctive example of modern religious architecture. Its floor plan is elongated and octagonal. The façade is dominated by a very tall, centrally positioned bell tower; the upper section features three zones with colored glass-concrete windows. The floor plan, tower, and window zones describe different aspects of the building: its shape, the façade’s composition, and the colored areas in the upper section.

Parks and Public Spaces

Parco Avis - Aido features a monument to donors created by sculptor Franco Dotti. Parco di Via della Pace has a large arena where various performances are held. The two places offer different points of interest: a named monument in one case and a venue for events in the other. If a particular performance is important to your travel plans, check the dates in advance.

If you take different public places into account when choosing your destination, these parks and churches add a range of historical, architectural, and cultural aspects to the picture of Azzano San Paolo.
