Adrara San Rocco can be explored through a variety of trail and cultural themes: short routes with stated distance and elevation figures, connections between valleys, and traces of religious and historical use. When planning, it is worth considering walking time, elevation gain and trail character separately. Local themes range from the wooded Valle di Bondo to the Torrente Guerna and the Contrade.

Hiking trails: short loops and longer connections

The Sentiero ASR 02 – Il bosco e la fauna is a 3 km loop on the wooded slope of the Valle di Bondo. Its themed sections focus on environmental education. The route description dated March 2, 2020, names the Romanesque church “Ai morti di Bondo” as the access point to the loop; there is a large parking area there.

The Sentiero ASR 01 – Percorso vita runs along the Torrente Guerna through greenery and is equipped as a fitness and nature trail. It is listed as 3 km long, with 20 m of elevation gain and a journey time of about one hour; it is also rated easy. The Sentiero ASR 03 – Coren is shorter at 1.4 km and about 30 minutes, but has 50 m of elevation gain. It is rated as a tourist trail. By comparison, the longer distance is the main feature of ASR 01, while the greater climb is the main feature of ASR 03.

The trail and access information for the ASR routes dates from March 2, 2020; check current trail conditions and access information before setting out. For a much longer hike, footpath 7 leads from Adrara San Rocco to Colle Dedine; the stated figures are up to five hours and 739 m of ascent. Another valley connection is described by Sentiero 714: it links the Adrara Valley to the Vigolo Valley via an old mule track and Colle Dedine.

Forest, water and rock

The forest trails also differ in character. Sentiero 744 passes through dense coniferous forests and by the rural settlements of Bariletti and Piei. Sentiero 714A runs through beech and larch forest and crosses two streams, whose water levels vary seasonally. There is a table with benches along the trail, which also offers views of Lago d’Iseo, Monte Guglielmo and Valle Camonica with its high peaks. Vegetation, individual buildings and trail facilities may change.

The upper reaches of the Torrente Guerna feature gorges, waterfalls, pools and rock slides, making them suitable for canyoning. The large pools in the rocky streambed are called “Tinelle.” Climbing is possible on the rock face at Coren using permanently installed bolts. Thus, alongside forest and valley trails, Adrara San Rocco also offers water landscapes and climbing as distinct themes.

Religious sites and traces of history

The Santuario dei SS. Faustino e Giovita contains paintings by Cambianica as well as vaulted-ceiling frescoes by Giacomo Belotti. Over the years, the sanctuary has become a frequent destination for pilgrims. Contrada Forno is a medieval hamlet in Adrara San Rocco; traces of travertine can still be seen on old windows at street level. In Contrada Dumengoni, the water channel and reconstructed waterwheel are visible.

The small Chiesa dell’Annunciata al “Forno” was built in the first half of the 20th century. About 30 metres away is a small church or chapel dedicated to San Giuda Taddeo. It can be reached via the path to the left of the church.

Local production is another of the area’s described features: at Corna there is a small family-run business that grows soft fruit and sells honey, soft fruit and jams. These products offer another glimpse of the area’s local character, whether your trip is focused mainly on the trails, the water or the historic sites.
