Stellanello lies in the upper Merula valley, surrounded by extensive olive groves. The municipality is a typical Ligurian settlement made up of scattered hamlets, set in a green and peaceful landscape. The surroundings and settlement pattern shape the character of the place: here, olive groves sit alongside a local history reflected in castles, churches and local traditions.

Landscape and Local History

Castello sottano was built around 1170 on a small hill above the Merula stream. In the mid-14th century, a large underground cistern and a mighty wall with water outlets were added. These architectural features tell the story of the site’s long history. Near the small cemetery also stand the imposing walls of Stellanello’s old castle. They belong to a castle built by the Clavesana family between the 12th and 13th centuries.

The churches, too, reflect different periods and styles. The parish church of San Vincenzo features Baroque forms, with polychrome marble altars inside. The church of Saints Vincenzo and Anastasio, by contrast, combines Romanesque and Baroque elements and contains frescoes and sacred artworks. The parish church of San Lorenzo Martire dates back to 1448, when it was founded under the direction of Bishop Giorgio Fiesco.

Other distinctive details complete this picture: the church of San Gregorio dates from the 15th century and preserves a valuable Baroque altar. Restoration work took place in 1929 and 1994. The Oratorio di San Damiano stands out for its octagonal structure. The Santuario della Madonna di Loreto houses a wooden group carved by Garaventa in 1700, depicting the Madonna and Saint Elizabeth.

Sacred Art and Local Traditions

The Cappella della Madonna della Neve links its name to a local legend: a miraculous snowfall in summer is said to have marked the site for its construction. In another hamlet, Rossi, stands the Cappella di San Francesco d’Assisi. It was probably built in the Middle Ages. The varying degrees of certainty about the dates are part of the history of each building.

The Santuario SS. Cosma e Damiano is also a focal point for the feast day of Saints Cosma and Damiano. It is celebrated every year with Masses, processions and cultural activities. Stellanello’s war memorial stands behind the sanctuary. The memorial’s location and the annual feast point to different aspects of local remembrance and religious life.

Hiking and Cycling Routes

The municipality lists hiking and cycling routes in its area. The municipal route directory, updated in July 2025, includes, among others, the route “Tra Uliveti, Frantoi, Cantine e Lavanda” (“Among Olive Groves, Oil Mills, Cellars and Lavender”). Its name brings olive groves, oil mills, wine cellars and lavender together under one theme, reflecting Stellanello’s rural landscape and character.

The “Fischia il vento” hiking trail can be started in Stellanello and followed towards the hamlet of Duranti. The song’s history is also connected with Duranti: the first verses of “Fischia il vento” were written at Passu du Beu in this hamlet. The trail and the story of the song bring together two distinct points of interest: route planning on the one hand and the area’s cultural heritage on the other.

Olive Oil as Part of the Local Heritage

Olive groves shape not only the landscape but also local production. The Frantoio Rossi tradition dates back to 1888; a passion for olive oil has been passed down there for five generations. Today, the business is based in San Damiano. The year refers to the beginning of the tradition, while San Damiano denotes its current location.

Visitors choosing Stellanello as a destination can explore several aspects of the same place: the scattered hamlets in the upper Merula valley, buildings bearing witness to different centuries, the feast-day tradition and routes through the municipality. These themes provide a practical starting point for planning a trip around your interests and looking for a hotel in Stellanello.
