Discover Ortovero
Accommodation in Ortovero
Ortovero can be explored from several different angles: geological traces of the Pliocene, religious buildings, the local history of Pogli and routes for a range of activities. The Argille di Ortovero are sandy-clayey deposits containing fossil shells from the Pliocene, associated with a marine transgression. The cultivation of roses and peaches also shapes the agricultural character of the area. When planning your trip, you can focus on cultural sites, nature trails and the local wine tradition.
Geology and architectural history
The parish church of San Silvestro is a medieval building that was altered in the 17th and 19th centuries. Both its medieval origins and later changes form part of its architectural history. The Oratorio di San Giovanni Battista was built on the ruins of the 13th-century castle of the Clavesana family. From there, you can enjoy a wide panoramic view over the Piana di Albenga. The geological deposits and historic buildings tell of different periods, from the Pliocene to medieval times and later alterations.
The parish church of Santo Stefano in the hamlet of Pogli houses a polyptych by Pietro Guido da Ranzo, dating from 1537. It depicts Saint Stephen and other saints. Pogli also preserves the remains of the battlemented towers of a fortified village founded by Albenga in 1288 to protect the valley. The towers point to the village’s history of fortification, while the polyptych offers a distinct focus on religious art.
Pogli and Frate Ave Maria
A walking tour of the hamlet of Pogli links places of particular importance to the life and spirituality of Frate Ave Maria. The Frate Ave Maria Museum documents key stages of his life through information panels: his childhood in Pogli, his family, his meeting with Don Orione, his long stay at the hermitage of Sant’Alberto and his death. His declaration as Venerable by John Paul II is also among the topics presented. The tour brings together personal milestones and Frate Ave Maria’s religious significance.
Each stop has an information panel with a map of the location, the tour stops, and information and images specific to that place. The panels also include translations of Frate Ave Maria’s thoughts in Braille. Maps, images and text provide different points of reference at each stop, while the tour connects the places in Pogli.
Trails and outdoor activities
The municipality has nature trails and routes for hiking, horse riding and mountain biking. Ortovero is also part of the “Pedala a Ponente” cycling tourism project. A municipal notice dated February 18, 2026, describes circular routes on mixed-surface roads with varying distances; project details may change. If you are planning your bike ride around these routes, check the latest route information before setting out.
The “Anello di Ortovero” is listed in a 2025 regional route update under route code GSVA222H1PE, with a length of 3,290 metres. The trekking route between Ortovero and Vendone starts at Parco Don Armato on Viale Chiesa in Ortovero. These are two different points of reference: a named route with a listed length, and a specific starting point for the trekking route to Vendone.
Traditions and Pigato
Traditional processions also shape the calendar. On Good Friday morning, the procession del Balzo follows an ancient route through Ortovero’s clay deposits and reaches the area of Pogli. The traditional Giro delle Cappelle is organised on Maundy Thursday by the Confraternity of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria. Both customs are associated with particular days of Holy Week, but each has its own route or organising community.
The Centro Enologico – Enoteca Regionale in Ortovero holds annual events to promote Pigato; the dates of individual events may vary. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the announced dates. At the Viticoltori Ingauni cooperative on Via Roma 3, you can buy wines from its own selection and other products. Together with the cultivation of roses and peaches, these wine-related attractions offer a glimpse of different aspects of Ortovero’s agricultural character.
