The destination offers different points of interest for these pursuits. History and culture come together particularly closely in Finalborgo; for outdoor activities, there are also trails, mountain bike routes and climbing areas.

History in Finalborgo and Beyond

The Santa Caterina monastery complex in Finalborgo comprises two Renaissance cloisters. The adjoining monastery church is now used as an auditorium, while the former monks’ cells house the Archaeological Museum. This brings historic architecture and present-day cultural use together in one ensemble.

The Museo Archeologico del Finale presents the history of the local area through objects and archaeological discoveries. Its program includes events and experiences that bring archaeology, nature and culture together. Another archaeological story concerns the “Young Prince” from the Arene Candide caves: he died about 28,000 years ago from severe facial trauma.

Castel Gavone, too, connects a specific place with a long history. The castle was built in the 12th century and served as a residence for the Del Carretto marquises. It stands on a hill behind Finalborgo and can be reached from there on foot or by bicycle via Strada Berretta. The historic associations of the town and the castle thus complement one another.

Another trace of history runs through the Val Ponci: the route there follows the ancient Via Iulia Augusta, which Augustus had built in 13 BC, and includes the remains of five Roman bridges. The history of an ancient road and actual bridge remains therefore come together along the same route.

A suggested route lets you explore Finalborgo on foot. The town has old walls, noble palaces, cloisters and monasteries. This makes a walk through the historic center different from a museum visit, where objects and archaeological discoveries take center stage.

Trails and Outdoor Highlights

The trail network in Finale Ligure is well signposted. For mountain bikers, Finale Ligure and the Finale Outdoor Region offer more than 200 routes for different riding styles, including enduro, all-mountain, e-bike and cross-country. The disciplines listed show the variety of cycling available in the destination.

The Finale Outdoor Region also has around 3,800 climbing routes on approximately 200 equipped crags. Mountain bike routes and climbing routes are distinct outdoor highlights. If you are planning your trip around a particular activity, these two offerings can help you decide whether the destination is right for you.

The coast offers a different focus: the beaches of Finale Ligure stretch for about eight kilometers. A succession of capes and headlands breaks up the coastline and shapes its contours. The range of travel themes thus extends from the historic townscape and outdoor activities to the beach landscape.

Getting There, the Market and Local Tradition

Finale Ligure has a railway station on the Genoa–Ventimiglia line. Regional trains connect it with the main cities of Liguria and northern Italy. This is a specific rail connection you can take into account when planning your stay.

The producers’ market in Finale Ligure offers locally grown vegetables and freshly picked fruit, as well as artisan cheeses, honey and homemade jams. The selection also includes preserves from the land and sea, as well as oil and wine. The market brings together a wide range of products from local agriculture and artisan production.

A recurring date in the events calendar is the San Pietro procession, held every year on June 29 in Finale Ligure. San Pietro is considered the patron saint of fishermen and sailors. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, the fixed date is a useful point of reference.
