Sarzana reveals itself through historic buildings, theatres and museums; within the municipal area, Marinella di Sarzana adds a coastal focus. When looking for a hotel in Sarzana, you can start by deciding which themes will shape your trip. Fortress architecture, sacred art and the beach appeal to different interests within the municipality.

Old town and fortifications

The historic centre lies within 15th-century city walls. Its character is defined by narrow, atmospheric streets. The Fortezza Firmafede adds a specific historical landmark to this picture: it was built at the behest of Lorenzo il Magnifico between 1487 and 1492 and is considered an important example of late 15th-century Florentine military architecture.

The Fortezza Firmafede houses the Museum of Fortresses, MUdeF, which is divided into 27 rooms. If you are planning a visit, check the latest access information beforehand. This allows you to plan the museum visit as a separate part of the day, alongside the fortress architecture itself.

The Fortezza di Sarzanello is also an important example of Renaissance military architecture. A short mule track, about 1.5 kilometres long, leads there from the historic centre; it follows a section of the Via Francigena. The two fortresses therefore offer different points of interest: Firmafede is notable for its dated construction history and Florentine context, while Sarzanello adds Renaissance architecture and the route described above.

Theatre, museums and sacred art

The Teatro degli Impavidi is a typical Italian box theatre, with a stalls area, three tiers of boxes and a gallery. This layout makes the theatre a distinct cultural highlight alongside the fortifications and museums. If you would like to attend a performance, check the schedule separately.

The Oratorio della Misericordia is now known as the Museo Diocesano. The museum is divided into six exhibition rooms and displays a reliquary of the vial of the Precious Blood of Jesus dating from the 8th century. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta houses the oldest painted Italian cross, a work by Maestro Guglielmo from 1138. This offers a chronological comparison ranging from the 8th-century reliquary to the cross of 1138; the works are also associated with different locations: the Museo Diocesano and the cathedral.

Marinella di Sarzana and the beach

Marinella di Sarzana lies within the municipal area and offers a sandy beach about 1.5 kilometres long. There are both managed and free beach sections, as well as shallow seabeds. This coastal information relates to Marinella, not the historic centre.

Getting your bearings on arrival

From the station, the tree-lined avenue visible at the exit leads into the centre. A taxi service is available opposite the station. The avenue provides a point of reference for finding your way into the city centre; the taxi service is another practical arrival tip. Check local transport details before your trip.
