Fezzano: Carruggi, Church and Nature on the Gulf
Accommodation in Fezzano
Fezzano lies in a small bay on the western side of the Gulf, at the foot of Monte Castellana. The sheltered shoreline and historic center give the village distinct facets. In the historic center, old houses stand close together, with narrow carruggi in between; by the bay, you can stroll among lush pine trees. San Giovanni Battista and Villa Cattaneo add two historical points of interest to the village.
The Historic Center and the Church of San Giovanni Battista
The historic center consists of old houses standing close together, with narrow carruggi lanes running between them. If you are interested in historic townscapes, you can see the dense layout not in a single building but in the way the houses and narrow passageways fit together.
The parish church of San Giovanni Battista was built in 1740. In the same year, the parish of Fezzano was separated from the parish of Marola and established as an independent parish. Inside, the church houses five large-scale paintings by local painter Giuseppe Tori and a wooden statue by Anton Maria Maragliano. An organ by Genoese organ builder Luigi Ciurlo was acquired for the church at the end of the 18th century. The building’s history and the parish’s independence thus come together in 1740; the organ was added later in the century.
Villa Cattaneo
Villa Cattaneo offers a different historical perspective: Simonetta Cattaneo lived in the villa in Fezzano, whose remains were recently restored. At the church, the focus is on its construction date and artworks; at the villa, it is on the biographical connection and the restored remains. For a cultural history itinerary, these are two distinct points of interest: sacred art on the one hand, and the story of a resident and traces of the villa on the other.
Shoreline, Woodland Path and Getting There
You can stroll among lush pine trees along the shore of the sheltered bay. For a different landscape, take the woodland path from the village of Fezzano to Trail No. 1. It passes the olive terraces of some houses before continuing into a shady holm oak forest. The two landscapes are clearly distinct: the bay and pines shape the walk along the shore, while on the woodland path, the terraces give way to holm oaks.
The woodland path starts at the bend before Fezzano Cemetery. You can reach the starting point by car or on bus lines 11 or P. If you plan to travel by bus, check the timetables before setting off. The location of the starting point and the transport options listed here give you a concrete basis for planning this walk.
Maritime Tradition in Fezzano
Fezzano is one of thirteen fishing villages that take part in the Palio del Golfo every year. If you want to time your trip to coincide with the event, check the dates in advance. The Palio is a recurring feature of the local annual calendar.
Bordo Libero ASD also has its operational base in Fezzano di Portovenere. The organization brings together people interested in sailing as a sport, a journey and an adventure. The Palio and sailing therefore reflect different aspects of the village’s maritime character: one is the annual participation of a fishing village, the other an organization centered on an interest in sailing.
