Fiumaretta di Ameglia lies opposite Bocca di Magra, on the left bank of the Magra River. In ancient times, the area was situated in front of the port of the city of Luni; over the centuries, it gradually silted up.

History Between Luni and the Present-Day Village

The present-day village was established in 1855, following the drainage of a former marshland. The planned urban layout is still visible in the oldest part. The Church of Sant’Isidoro in Fiumaretta was built as a subsidiary church to provide spiritual support to the agricultural population. The area of Fiumaretta became a parish on December 31, 1947; civil recognition followed on September 14, 1949. The history of the area thus connects two scales: the transformation of the river landscape over the centuries and the village’s specific development in the 19th century.

Beach and Maritime Activities

Fiumaretta’s beaches consist of fine, firm sand. The bathing area offers water sports and boating activities connected with the tourist harbor. Marina 2000-77 is a nautical facility in Fiumaretta, on the left bank of the Magra, offering services for water sports enthusiasts and recreational boaters. Its particular exposure to the wind makes Fiumaretta a favorite spot for sailing enthusiasts.

The Kau Kau Club is a water sports school based in Fiumaretta di Ameglia. Sport fishing is offered by the Circolo Barcaioli Pescatori Sportivi Fiumaretta and is open to everyone. Lorenzo Sub is a diving center in Fiumaretta, located within the Montemarcello-Magra-Vara Natural Park.

The Mouth of the Magra, Birdlife and Routes

Near Fiumaretta, the mouth of the Magra River is a particularly interesting area for observing gulls (Larus argentatus and Larus ridibundus), European shags (Phalacrocorax aristotelis desmarestii) and Sandwich terns (Sterna sandvicensis). Their presence is seasonal, so the timing of your trip matters for wildlife watching. You can cross the river mouth by canoe to discover the hidden beaches between Punta Bianca and Punta Corvo. The “Da Bocca di Magra a Luni” stage is completely flat.

Notte Blu and Local Cuisine

Along with Bocca di Magra, Fiumaretta is one of the two riverside villages that take part each year in the Municipality of Ameglia’s summer festival, Notte Blu. A boat and shuttle service connect the two places. The festival includes street food and craft markets; individual editions may vary. Over the years, the Associazione Vivere Fiumaretta has organized food walks with wine tastings in the surrounding area.

Birdwatching and Notte Blu offer different pointers for planning your trip: the presence of the species mentioned is seasonal, while the festival takes place every summer. If you are looking for a hotel for Notte Blu, check the date of that year’s edition in advance and plan your trip accordingly.
