San Salvatore: Architectural History, Festivals and Landscape
Accommodation in San Salvatore
San Salvatore brings together Romanesque-Gothic architecture, an older Baroque church, historic festivals and a distinctive hilly landscape. The monumental Borgo San Salvatore dei Fieschi complex stands on a hilltop at the edge of the plain crossed by the Entella and at the foot of Monte San Giacomo. The plain, hills and mountain create a clear landscape setting for the town’s cultural sites and trails.
Buildings and historical context
The Basilica dei Fieschi is one of Liguria’s most remarkable and best-preserved Romanesque-Gothic buildings. San Salvatore il Vecchio offers a different perspective on the history of the buildings: the Baroque church is now deconsecrated and used as an oratory and for exhibitions and conferences. It is older than the Basilica dei Fieschi and served as the parish church until 1798. This chronology distinguishes the older parish church from the Romanesque-Gothic basilica.
The Palazzo Comitale also has a historical date associated with it: its construction is traditionally dated to around 1252. The Centro Culturale Museo dei Fieschi is a permanent museum housed in the so-called stables of the Palazzo Comitale; it was inaugurated in 2005. The dates serve different purposes: 1798 marks the end of its role as a parish church, around 1252 is the traditional approximate date for the construction of the Palazzo, and 2005 marks the inauguration of the museum. Thus, the history of its use, the traditional account of its construction and the museum’s inauguration are distinct, not a single building phase.
Festivals throughout the year
A regular date in the annual calendar is 13 August: Addio do Fantìn, a historical reenactment, takes place every year in the square in front of the Basilica dei Fieschi. One edition’s program included the recreation of a medieval village with stalls run by merchants and craftspeople, games, performances by falconers and jesters, as well as music and dancing. If you are planning a trip specifically for Addio do Fantìn, check the event details in advance.
Another festival tradition is the Fiera dei Perdoni e dei Perdonetti in San Salvatore di Cogorno. It celebrates the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, adding a religious note alongside the historical reenactment.
Loop trail and landscape
The Anello dei Fieschi loop trail runs from the Basilica dei Fieschi to Monte San Giacomo and is 6 km long. Slate was once quarried on Monte San Giacomo. The mountain thus connects two periods: it forms part of the loop trail and was once a site of slate quarrying. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
The Ciclovia dell’Ardesia also has a clear connection to the landscape: it runs through the Entella Fauna Oasis. The Anello can be described by its loop route, starting point and length; the Ciclovia’s specific landscape setting is the oasis.
