San Colombano offers visitors several points of interest: churches dating from different periods, an ethnographic museum in Calvari, hiking trails, and a rural food culture. If you are looking for a hotel in San Colombano, consider whether local history, mountain scenery, or hiking is the main focus of your trip.

Churches and Local History

The Chiesa di S. Colombano di Vignale is an 18th-century parish church in San Colombano Certenoli. It is located on Via F. di S. Colombano OP. The street name provides a specific reference point for locating the church within the town.

The histories of other churches also mark distinct periods. Santa Maria Assunta in Certenoli has been a parish since at least the 13th century; Santo Stefano in Cichero was a parish by the 16th century at the latest. These two dates refer to their existence as parishes, whereas the Chiesa di S. Colombano di Vignale is classified as an 18th-century church. This places different aspects of church history side by side without equating a parish’s history with a building’s date.

The Museo del Lascito Cuneo, an ethnographic museum also known as the Museo delle Memorie locali, is located in the hamlet of Calvari. The second name directly highlights its connection to local memories. With its ethnographic focus, the museum complements the themes of church history with a different cultural perspective.

Landscape and Hiking Trails

The landscape of San Colombano Certenoli includes terraced hills, rural hamlets, and old terraces cultivated with olive trees. Olive groves alternate with chestnut woods. Together, these features create a rural landscape in which cultivated slopes and woodland both contribute to the character of the area.

The Val Chichero forms an almost perfectly oval orographic basin and is a destination for many hikers. Easy hikes lead from the valley of San Colombano Certenoli toward the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri along FIE and 7P trails. The hiking options described therefore range from easy walks in this direction to a specific route up a mountain.

The SI G08 trail follows a rising ridge to Monte Ramaceto, which stands 1,345 metres high. Along the way, views open onto the valley formed by the Torrente Lavagna. Another hiking route is called “Ramaceto (Monte) da San Colombano per il Passo Ramaggi” and starts in San Colombano Certenoli. Check current trail conditions locally before setting out.

The mountain landscape offers another distinctive feature: sandstone outcrops lie on the southern slope of Monte Ramaceto in an amphitheatre-like formation. Together with the rising ridge and views into the valley, this offers a different perspective on Monte Ramaceto than its elevation alone.

Rural Food Culture

Local food culture includes “I batolli,” a traditional peasant dish made from short, coarse taglierini. This concise description captures both the distinctive shape of the pasta and its rural origins. Alongside the olive groves and terraced slopes, the dish offers a culinary connection to San Colombano’s rural character.
