Castel Giuliano combines nature trails along the Fosso della Mola with historical traces from several periods. Waterfalls, the remains of early ironworks and churches dating back several centuries give your stay a variety of possible focuses. If you are planning a hotel stay, you can decide in advance whether to focus on excursions into the countryside or on local history.

Hiking along the Fosso della Mola

The Via del Ferro begins at Piazza di Castel Giuliano and follows the Fosso della Mola through an unspoiled natural landscape. Along the way, it passes the ruins of the ancient Fioravanti ironworks, which date from the 16th and 17th centuries, and runs between two large waterfalls formed by the stream. This brings the watercourse and the former ironworks into close proximity. The trail combines scenery and industrial history in a single route.

Another option is the Monte La Rota–Castel Giuliano circular hike. For a tour described by the nature park in 2023, the meeting point was Piazza Santa Croce; the hike was listed as 12 kilometres and seven hours. Hikers may encounter animals, plants, rocks and bodies of water along the route. The stated duration gives you an idea of the scale of the hike: set aside a large part of the day for it.

The Cascate di Castel Giuliano

The waterfall at the Cascate di Castel Giuliano is about ten metres high. From a car park, the approach first follows a public road for about 200 metres, then continues for 2.3 kilometres along a hiking trail. Take both sections into account when planning your visit, and check the route again beforehand.

Palazzo Patrizi and Etruscan traces

Palazzo Patrizi includes a park with numerous varieties of roses. The chapel attached to the palazzo is dedicated to San Filippo Neri and dates from the first half of the 17th century. The remains of tombs and storerooms in the park preserve traces of an ancient Etruscan settlement. The rose garden, chapel and archaeological remains point to different aspects of the area’s history.

Churches and local history

The Chiesa di San Rocco was built in the 17th century at the behest of the Patrizi, who were the landowners at the time, and was consecrated in 1683. It features a large interior fresco and a small bell gable dating from the 18th century. The main altarpiece depicts the Deposition of Christ, with Mary Magdalene and the Apostles Peter and John. This scene adds a specific motif to the church’s architectural history.

The history of the area dates back to Roman times: Castel Giuliano has been used for agriculture ever since. Porta Coperta near Cerveteri offers another link to the ancient past. Its remains belong to an Etruscan gate to the city of Caere. A route along old roads to the borgo of Castel Giuliano passes Porta Coperta. In antiquity, a route led from Porta Coperta near Cerveteri past necropolises towards the Castel Giuliano area. This makes it possible to consider local history and older routes together.
