Roccantica combines a karst landscape and hiking trails with churches, frescoes, and medieval traditions. Revotano and the Vacunae Rosae rose garden represent the natural side of the area, while its historic buildings offer a distinct cultural and historical perspective. If you are looking for a hotel in Roccantica, you can first consider whether nature trails, architectural history, or local festivals and food culture will shape your stay.

Sinkhole, rose garden, and trails

Revotano is a karst sinkhole near the historic center. It formed when a cavity created by underground water erosion collapsed under its own weight. The sinkhole is about 250 meters in diameter and 130 meters deep. A footpath leads through Mediterranean scrub to this geological formation.

Below the Hermitage of San Leonardo, on the way to Revotano, stands an old watermill. Only its outer structure remains. The Vacunae Rosae garden in Roccantica offers a different focus: more than 5,500 varieties of roses grow across two hectares.

The Cammino del Capraro is an old circular trail from Roccantica to the Rifugio Cognolo mountain hut. It is associated with the routes used by transhumant shepherds. Monte Pizzuto is within the municipal area of Roccantica. From Fonte Regna, a trail continues to viewpoints overlooking the Sabina Valley. The trails described therefore differ in their destinations and their connection to the landscape.

Churches, towers, and frescoes

The Hermitage of San Leonardo dates from the 8th or 9th century and consists of two rooms carved into the rock. In the historic center stands a square defensive tower surrounded by three rings of walls. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is located in the heart of the historic center. It has a single-nave layout and an apse with a semicircular end.

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo was built in 1740 over an earlier church. The Church of San Valentino is mentioned in a document dating back to 792; as a Gothic church, it has five chapels. Both buildings contribute in different ways to the town’s long architectural history.

Santa Caterina is adorned with frescoes depicting the life of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, created by Pietro Coleberti in 1430. The restored fresco cycle is one of the cultural highlights of Sabina Tiberina. The Poor Clare castle-monastery complex also has a historical connection: it was built in the mid-16th century over the ancient ruins of Ursino Castle. The Archivio Storico di Roccantica preserves numerous medieval documents.

Crafts, festivals, and local cuisine

The Sartoria Medievale displays some of the more than 1,000 costumes made by the local medieval tailoring workshop. They were produced on the basis of careful historical research. Medioevo in Festa is described as a historical reenactment held annually in mid-August, featuring a parade with more than 500 people in historical costumes.

At the Frittello Festival in Roccantica, cauliflower is fried in Sabina DOP extra virgin olive oil. The tradition has continued for more than 50 years, and the festival takes place on Saint Joseph’s Day. Alongside the historic buildings, crafts, festival culture, and a distinctive local flavor are also highlights to explore during a stay in Roccantica.
