Ornaro: Rocca, Church Art and Ancient Paths
Accommodation in Ornaro
Ornaro Alto sits on a hill near kilometer 64 of the Via Salaria Nuova. The village offers views across the lower Sabina almost as far as Rome, toward the Turano Valley, and north to the mountain scenery around Terminillo. If you’re looking for hotels in Ornaro, you can choose the focus of your trip based on three themes: the historic center, views, or exploring on foot.
The Rocca and Church Art
The Rocca di Ornaro Alto dates back to a medieval complex from around the 11th century. In the 15th century, the tower was given a base and raised by one story. This makes it possible to distinguish the complex’s origins from the tower’s later modification as separate building phases. Its ownership history also includes several stages: the castle first belonged to the Brancaleoni family, then to the Orsini, and finally to the Apostolic Chamber.
The parish church of Sant’Antonino Martire is the only church within the historic center. Its apse preserves a well-preserved 16th-century fresco. The main altar rests on a milestone from the ancient Via Salaria, marking the 43rd mile and bearing the names of Valentinian, Valens and Gratian. The fresco and milestone thus point to different periods that come together in the furnishings of the same church.
Ornaro Alto and Its Walking Routes
You can explore the oldest part of Ornaro Alto on foot, following narrow lanes as far as the Piazzetta della Rocca. The route passes through the historic village to a specific, named destination. The ancient Via Salaria has a different character: its section, which runs mostly through the territory of Ornaro, can be walked, and numerous geological outcrops and infrastructure remains make its route traceable. This is about more than a walk through lanes: it is also a chance to follow the course of an old road by its traces.
Another route leads from Ornaro along the ancient Via del Sale, through the woods and up to the provincial road. The woodland section and the endpoint at the provincial road give this route a different character from a walk through the oldest part of the village. Together, the routes offer different ways to explore: narrow lanes leading to the Piazzetta della Rocca, visible clues to the course of the Via Salaria, and a woodland stretch along the Via del Sale.
The Palio degli Orsini
The Palio degli Orsini program included a historical costume procession, competitions in various skill-based disciplines, and a medieval dinner. The event was scheduled for the second Sunday in July during the summer period. If you’d like to plan your trip around the festival, check in advance whether a date has been announced for your travel period.
The different highlights can help you plan your stay and get a sense of Ornaro: the Rocca and Sant’Antonino Martire represent its architectural and religious history, while the lanes and two ancient roads offer different ways to explore the village and landscape on foot. Views across the Sabina, toward the Turano Valley and in the direction of Terminillo round out these historical and scenic highlights with a clear picture of the surrounding area.
