Albana: Castle, hiking trails and wine
Accommodation in Albana
Albana combines a rich local history with hiking trails and regional produce. If you are looking for a hotel in Albana, its historic buildings, varied routes and regional food and wine offerings can help you decide what to focus on during your trip.
Castello di Albana and its historical background
Castello di Albana was built to protect the Judrio Valley and was first mentioned in 1161. The date refers to its first mention, not the year it was built. In the course of numerous military conflicts, the castle was destroyed and rebuilt several times; it suffered further damage during the First World War.
The bell tower of the Church of Santo Spirito is an ancient watchtower. This means two historical functions stand side by side: the castle was built to protect the Judrio Valley, while the tower served as a watchtower. The castle’s first mention and the church tower’s role as a watchtower offer different ways to get to know Albana through its buildings.
Hikes through and to Albana
A short hike takes you through the historic village of Albana. The route from Centa can take you back to Albana and cover 10,000 steps. Stage 9 of the Le 44 Chiesette votive trail leads from Castelmonte to Albana. On the Sentiero Italia CAI, section SI A19 reaches Albana/Prepotto and ends at the bridge over the Judrio. The routes serve different purposes: they take you through the village, back to Albana, or from a named starting point to the village or bridge as a stage of a trail.
The features described are useful for choosing a hike: the short hike takes you through the historic village, while the route from Centa leads back to Albana and covers 10,000 steps; the stages have named start and end points. This lets you distinguish between routes based on their specific descriptions.
There is no active water point in Albana on section SI A19. Check this route information before setting off and plan your water supply accordingly. You can reach the starting point of Stage 9 by car, bicycle or on foot; an intercity bus operated by TPL FVG from Cividale is another way to get there. Check the connection before travelling, as transport information may change.
Regional produce and wine
Stanig grows the local Schioppettino di Prepotto grape variety. The winery offers cellar tours and wine tastings. Katia Toti sells typical local products, while the Al Vecchio Gelso farm serves typical local dishes with wines from Stanig. These offer different culinary highlights to choose from: a local grape variety, local products, and dishes paired with Stanig wines.
If you would like to include these offerings in your trip, check their availability in advance. This applies to cellar tours and tastings at Stanig as well as the current offerings at Katia Toti and Al Vecchio Gelso.
