Accommodation in Paluzza
War history on trails and in the museum
The trail to Pal Piccolo includes Italian and Austrian trenches. The trenches are accessible on foot and have been restored by volunteers. In summer, guided tours of the fortifications, trenches and communication trenches on Pal Piccolo are offered. As this program is seasonal, check current availability before your visit. Numerous military remains are visible at the Freikofel open-air museum of the First World War. The trail, summer tours and open-air museum offer different ways to explore military history.
A museum with a dedicated themed room
The museum “The Carnia Area in the Great War 1915–1918” comprises ten exhibition rooms and additional rooms for museum activities. The exhibition space covers 700 square metres and spans two floors. A dedicated themed room explores the history of the Carnic-Portatrici and the heroine Maria Plozner Mentil. This gives the museum a clearly structured exhibition with a specific historical focus. The number of rooms, the floor area and the layout across two floors also give you an idea of the museum’s scale.
Memorial sites and church art
The Timau ossuary contains the remains of 1,763 fallen soldiers, including 298 unidentified Italians and 65 Austro-Hungarian soldiers. Cristo Re Church in Timau houses a 15-metre-high wooden crucifix. The Cathedral of Santa Maria in Paluzza features frescoes by Giuseppe Furnio on the ribbed vault and in the lunettes. Paintings in the Church of San Osvaldo in Cleulis depict emigrants’ departure and the Carnic-Portatrici. Together, these examples range from commemorating the fallen to sacred art and depictions of emigration and the Carnic-Portatrici.
Trails, a tower and the landscape
The Torre Moscarda in Paluzza dates back to 1200. The trail from Museis to Torre Moscarda starts at the Bosco di Museis farm in the village of the same name in Paluzza. It follows a gently rising cycle and footpath through the forest. For the Freikofel route, the starting point is beyond Timau, at the Kantonniera by the fourth hairpin bend, where CAI trail 401a begins. These details provide different points of reference for planning your routes: for the Museis route, the start at the farm and the forest section; for Freikofel, the named trailhead.
The Laghetti di Timau in the municipality of Paluzza were originally formed when a landslide dammed the But stream. Centro Laghetti can be reached from Tolmezzo via State Road 52 towards the Austrian border. It is two kilometres north of the village of Timau in the municipality of Paluzza. The Centro fondo Laghetti in Paluzza has a ski school. As services may be seasonal, check current availability for your travel dates.
