When planning a trip to Bevazzana, you can focus on two distinct themes: cycling routes and water landscapes, or ecclesiastical history and archaeological traces. If you are looking for a hotel in Bevazzana, you can start by considering which themes you want to shape your trip. The routes also differ in their destinations and landscape settings.

Cycling routes between locks, the canal and the lagoon

Itinerario n. 4 follows a cycling and walking path away from road traffic to the locks of Bevazzana. At the locks, there is a swing bridge over the Bevazzana basin. This gives the route a specific destination in the water landscape. As route conditions can change, please check the latest conditions before setting out.

Itinerario n. 5 follows the Canale di Bevazzana, considered an ancient Venetian coastal waterway. Along this route is a pine forest with numerous plant and animal species. These include the butterfly Zerynthia polyxena, from the Papilionidae family, which is protected at European level. This route brings together a historic waterway and the biodiversity of the pine forest.

The Terzo Bacino e i Casoni route starts in the town of Bevazzana and follows the Litoranea Veneta waterway by bicycle. It runs alongside the lagoon habitat and the open landscape of the Terzo Bacino. The route description is shaped by both its course along the waterway and views of the lagoon and open landscape.

Another cycling route passes through the built-up area of Bevazzana and then heads back towards Bibione. This gives it a different connection to the area than the routes to the locks or along the waterway. The Idrovora Bevazzana can also be seen from Via Litoranea on the Bibione–Portogruaro tourist route.

When planning an outing, you can choose among these options based on your preferred focus: the locks and swing bridge, the canal and pine forest, the landscape around the Terzo Bacino, or the route through the built-up area towards Bibione. Each description provides different points of reference.

Ecclesiastical history and archaeological traces

A painting by the Venetian artist Mario Ferrari-Bravo was donated to the church of Bevazzana. Monsignor Cicuttini blessed the work on 26 December 1954. Another historical landmark is the former church of Santa Maria di Bevazzana, which was moved to Lignano in 1965.

During the dismantling and relocation of the church in 1965–1966, the remains of an early Christian oratory were discovered at a depth of about 55 centimetres. Roman structures dating from the 1st to the 3rd–4th century AD may have been located beneath the present building. Possible examples include a villa with an adjoining necropolis or a pagan place of worship. An early Christian oratory was probably built on the site in the 4th or 5th century AD. The possible Roman history of the site is therefore distinct from the tentative dating of the oratory.

The historical themes range from the dated painting and the relocation of the former church to the possible Roman structures and the early Christian oratory. For travellers who want to explore Bevazzana’s history as well as its cycling routes, these events offer a separate focus when planning a trip.
