Cavazzo Carnico: Nature, Lake and Culture
Accommodation in Cavazzo Carnico
In Cavazzo Carnico, you can explore nature, go hiking and discover cultural history as distinct areas of interest. The shores of Lago di Cavazzo offer lakeside paths and birdwatching, while a hike to Monte San Simeone takes you through an area rich in butterflies. Churches, the Centro Visite of the Ecomuseo Val del Lago and the ecomuseum’s visitor routes offer more to explore. If you’re looking for hotels for your trip, you can plan your stay around your interests: the lake and landscape, sacred art, or the ecomuseum’s exhibitions and routes.
Lakeside, Birdwatching and Hiking
Along the lakeside paths of Lago di Cavazzo, there are several birdwatching spots where you can observe coots, Eurasian coots and kingfishers. The Pieve di Santo Stefano in Cesclans offers a different perspective on the lake: it stands on a rocky outcrop at an altitude of 384 m and overlooks Lago di Cavazzo below. The named bird species are the focus along the shore, while the Pieve is notable for its elevated position and lake view.
A hike to Monte San Simeone takes you through unspoilt surroundings with a large number of butterflies. The destination’s nature experiences are therefore distinct: the lakeside paths focus on the birds of the lake, while the hike is about the landscape and butterflies. If you’re planning your trip around your interests, you’ll find both lakeside observation spots and a hiking destination with its own nature focus.
Churches and Historic Traces
The Pieve di Santo Stefano in Cesclans is one of the eleven ancient parish churches of Carnia. The church’s crypt houses the Antiquarium. The Chiesa di San Daniele is an 18th-century church that houses an altarpiece by Tintoretto depicting the birth of Mary. San Rocco, in turn, is a 16th-century votive church with furnishings dating from the 17th and 18th centuries.
The Chiesa di San Candido in Somplago is also among the area’s historic churches and has Romanesque origins. It stands in a square below the rock face of Cesclans, which drops steeply towards the lake. Together, the churches span a period from Romanesque origins to the 18th century. Their construction dates, functions and furnishings can be considered separately: San Rocco is a votive church, while the Pieve is an ancient parish church whose crypt houses the Antiquarium.
Ecomuseum and Other Things to Explore
The Centro Visite of the Ecomuseo Val del Lago is a hub for its educational and outreach activities. Established in 2002, the centre hosts permanent exhibitions about bird nests, the “sassi” of the Tagliamento and traditional lake fishing. The topics range from nature observation to the landscape and fishing traditions.
The ecomuseum’s visitor routes currently open to the public include the mouth of the Rio Schiasazze and its reed bed, as well as the fish hatchery in Somplago. These stops draw attention to different aspects of the area: a river mouth and reed bed, as well as a fish hatchery. The history of hydroelectric power is also among the topics in Somplago: the hydroelectric power station there was built between 1954 and 1958 in an underground cavern.
At Lago di Cavazzo, the Nautilago sailing school, authorised by the Federazione Italiana Vela, runs sailing and canoeing courses in summer. If you’d like to include a course in your travel plans, check locally in advance for current dates. This lets you make seasonal activities a focus alongside birdwatching, hiking and cultural history.
