Castelmonte brings together the history of a fortified sanctuary and a village. The complex retains its fortress character, while trails and viewpoints at Colle della Croce define its connection with the landscape. This offers a clear distinction when choosing it as a travel destination: pilgrimage history and works of art are the cultural focus; the nature park, rest areas and panoramic views reveal another side of the place. Its history spans the development into a village by 1253, art from the 15th century, and nature park status since 1992.

From Fortified Sanctuary to Village

By 1253, the fortified sanctuary of Castelmonte had grown into a village. During this period, a portico was built in front of the church to shelter pilgrims. The history of the place thus tells both of the sanctuary’s development into a village and of a specific architectural purpose: the portico was built to protect pilgrims. The building history shows how the religious site and the pilgrimage tradition are intertwined.

High walls surround the complex, which retains its fortress character. The village can be entered through two gates. These two details describe different aspects of Castelmonte: the fortified form of the sanctuary complex and the entrances to the village.

Works of Art with Distinctive Features

The statue of the Madonna and Child brings together its material, date and a distinctive name. It was made from painted limestone around the middle of the 15th century and weighs more than four hundredweight. Because of her lively, maternal expression, she is still known as the “Madonna viva.” The name draws attention to the figure’s expression; details about its material, weight and date provide further specific information about the work.

Another work is located on the south façade of the church: the white marble relief “Madonna col Bambino lattante,” dating from the late 15th century. Compared with the statue, it has a different material, a specifically identified location and a later date. The two works of art are thus distinct examples of sacred art from different periods of the 15th century.

There is also a fountain dating from 1645 in a small square in Castelmonte. Its date adds a later point of reference to the 15th-century works of art. The dated traces of the place thus span several centuries rather than belonging to a single period.

Trails and Views at Colle della Croce

Colle della Croce has been a nature park since 1992, with trails, rest areas and benches. These features combine outdoor walks with places to take a break, giving the connection with the landscape a tangible form. An exceptional panorama can be enjoyed from the foot of the large metal cross on Colle della Croce. The view from the cross and the trails with their rest areas are distinct features of the nature park.

Along Via delle antiche Pievi di Prepotto, there are rest areas where you can stop for refreshments and enjoy the surrounding hilly landscape. The two landscape settings are distinguished by the details described: at Colle della Croce, the focus is on the nature park, trails, benches and the panorama from the metal cross; along the Via, the defining features are the rest areas and the hilly landscape.
