In Sgonico, speleology and the karst landscape come together in different ways. Grotta Gigante and its Grande Caverna, the scientific speleology museum, the Carsiana Botanical Garden and the Anello del Monte Lanaro circular trail each offer a different focus. If you’re looking for a hotel in Sgonico, you can plan your trip according to whether you’re especially interested in the underground natural environment, scientific topics, plants or trails through the karst landscape.

Grotta Gigante and Grande Caverna

The Grande Caverna opens as a single natural chamber about 80 metres deep inside Grotta Gigante. It measures 98.50 metres in height, 167.60 metres in length and 76.30 metres in width. Its length is more than twice its width; its height falls between the two horizontal measurements. This makes it possible to distinguish the chamber’s three dimensions rather than reading them as a single size measurement.

Speleo Experience: shafts and passages

The Speleo Experience follows a complex system of vertical shafts and short horizontal passages to a depth of 252 metres below the surface. This offers a specific activity through an extensive cave system alongside the single large natural chamber of the Grande Caverna. If you’d like to book the Speleo Experience, check its availability in advance.

Two different depth measurements

The reference point is important when considering the depth measurements: about 80 metres describes how deep inside Grotta Gigante the Grande Caverna opens. The 252 metres, by contrast, refers to the depth below the surface reached by the Speleo Experience. The figures therefore describe different things. This helps you distinguish the single natural chamber from the cave activity through shafts and passages when planning your trip.

Speleology in the museum

The Museo Scientifico Speleologico della Grotta Gigante occupies two floors of the building where cave visitors are welcomed. The exhibition covers geology, speleology, palaeontology and archaeology, as well as geophysical and karst research, flora and fauna. One specific exhibit is the complete skeleton of a cave bear of the subspecies Ursus Spelaeus subspecies Uralensis. It illustrates the palaeontological focus; the other exhibition topics extend well beyond this, bringing together the natural sciences, archaeology and research into the karst landscape.

Botanical garden and nature reserves

The Carsiana Botanical Garden groups native karst plants according to their respective habitats, which are set out on the slopes of a characteristic doline. The focus here is on plants and their habitats, rather than the dimensions of an underground chamber. The areas of the two nature reserves are also specified: Monte Lanaro covers 285 hectares, and Orsario 156 hectares. Monte Lanaro is therefore 129 hectares larger. Both reserves are in the municipalities of Sgonico (Zgonik) and Monrupino (Repentabor).

Trails through nature and cultural heritage

The Anello del Monte Lanaro circular trail runs through oak forests, karst meadows and rocky outcrops typical of the area. From the summit, the view stretches from the Julian Alps to the Adriatic Sea. The trail therefore highlights both the landscape along the route and the view from the summit.

The Gemina trail leads to the 15th-century Church of San Ulderico, considered one of the oldest churches in the Karst. The destinations described therefore differ: forests, meadows, rocks and summit views shape the Anello del Monte Lanaro, while the church is a specific destination on the Gemina trail. If you include walking trails in your travel plans, you can choose between a circular route focused on the landscape and a route with a historic destination.

Wine sales through an Osmiza

The direct sale of wine is also regulated in Sgonico. Local winegrowers may sell their own wine through an Osmiza if they have declared their wine production and are registered in the Trieste Chamber of Commerce’s business register. The basis is the municipal regulation as amended on 30 November 2020. If you’re planning to visit an Osmiza, check the opening hours of the specific establishment in advance.
