Local History and Buildings

The Chiesa Arcipretale di Sant’Agata was rebuilt in 1881 in the Neoclassical style, based on a design by the architect Pritelli. It stands on the foundations of a Renaissance building dating from 1494. The church preserves works by D. Tasselli from Lugo and Orfeo Orfei from Massa Lombarda. Two different periods are therefore represented here: the earlier Renaissance building and the later 19th-century reconstruction. The artists named and their places of origin add a connection to other towns in the area to the story of the church’s furnishings.

The Torre Civica of Sant’Agata sul Santerno also tells the story of the town’s earlier history: it was built over the ancient entrance gate to the medieval castle. Since 1487, its bell has been known as “la campana della ragione” (“the bell of reason”). Its historical significance lies both in the tower’s construction and in the bell’s traditional name. The Santerno River, in turn, had already been an important route between Spina and Etruria since pre-Roman times. This long historical perspective differs from the specific buildings and works of art found in the town.

Film History and Events

Vittorio De Sica filmed several scenes for the 1961 film “Boccaccio 70,” starring Sophia Loren, in the building now occupied by Osteria del Boccaccio. The osteria is housed in a restored old stable and is located at Via S. Vitale 14 in Sant’Agata sul Santerno. The place thus connects a historic use of the building with a specific chapter in film history. As details about a venue can change, it is advisable to check the information again before visiting.

Parco del Boccaccio is described as a large green space equipped for events. Weddings, birthdays, company parties, banquets and private celebrations are mentioned. If you are travelling for a celebration or event, you can take this occasion into account separately when planning your trip. For specific events, it is a good idea to check the relevant dates and availability in advance.

Agriculture and Cycling

Terrestra invites visitors to take an active part in various activities at an agricultural business at Via San Vitale 13 in Sant’Agata sul Santerno. The agricultural project includes Podere Casetta: the estate covers just under seven hectares and is certified organic. A report dated 6 December 2020 names a range of fruit as the main focus of production, including plums, pears, persimmons, medlars and apricots, as well as Merlot and Trebbiano grapes. If you are interested in specific products, check their seasonal availability separately.

Sant’Agata sul Santerno also has a cycle path along the SP253R San Vitale. Restoration work was planned for 2024 following the floods of May 2023. If you would like to include the cycle path in your plans, check its current condition in advance.
