Alfonsine brings together several distinct themes for a stay: remembrance of the Second World War along the Senio, the literary heritage of Vincenzo Monti, and a protected area with guided nature excursions. When choosing a hotel for this trip, you can first decide whether your main interest is museums and art, nature, or an event. The places and activities differ in content and format, offering concrete points of reference for planning your time in Alfonsine.

Remembrance and literary heritage

The Museo della battaglia del Senio opened on 10 April 1981. It is a place of remembrance for the municipality of Alfonsine and the towns along the Senio River, commemorating events of the Second World War. From Alfonsine railway station on the Ferrara–Ravenna line, the museum is about a ten-minute walk away.

The Casa Museo Vincenzo Monti offers a different cultural perspective. It is located in the house in Alfonsine where Vincenzo Monti was born, and preserves manuscripts, letters, portraits and mementos. The collection brings together written records, portraits and mementos. This gives the literary focus a concrete form, distinct from the communal remembrance of the war at the Museo della battaglia del Senio.

Art and visiting hours at Santa Maria

The church of Santa Maria also offers a distinctive artistic highlight: the apse area has stained-glass windows, and a painting of the Baptism of Jesus by Anacleto Margotti is also part of the church. Santa Maria is open during services. Daily visiting hours are also listed as 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The opening hours were updated on 25 July 2024; check them before your visit.

Nature, guided excursions and the Senio route

The Riserva Naturale Speciale di Alfonsine is divided into three sections. The reserve is home to a population of European pond turtles (Emys orbicularis), a species protected at European level that has become a symbol of the protected area. This population gives the nature theme a concrete focus, although sightings are not guaranteed. The Museo Casa Monti offers guided walking or cycling excursions in the surrounding area and in the sections of the reserve.

The historic Liberation walk, Nel Senio della Memoria, takes place on 25 April and covers 18 kilometres along the Senio River between Cotignola and Alfonsine. It can be completed on foot or by bicycle. This gives visitors a choice of formats: guided excursions in the surrounding area and the sections of the reserve, or a clearly defined walk along the Senio.

An annual event

The traditional Sagra delle Alfonsine, also known as Festa degli Spaventapasseri, takes place every year and invites visitors to take part in local traditions. It adds a recurring event to the museums and nature attractions. If the festival is a key reason for your trip, check the dates for that year’s edition in advance.
