If you are planning a trip to Rustigazzo, you can shape your stay around cultural history, activity or scenery. The Antiquarium di Veleia and the archaeological site are located in LocalitĂ  Rustigazzo; various route options in the Monte Moria Provincial Park also start in the village. When looking for hotels in Rustigazzo, it helps to first consider which of these themes you want to define your stay.

Veleia and local history

Veleia was founded as a municipium after the Roman conquest in the 2nd century BC, in the heart of the territory of the Ligurian tribal community of the Veleates. Today, it is one of northern Italy’s most important archaeological centres. The Antiquarium displays finds documenting important events in Veleia’s history. This allows you to complement your exploration of the archaeological site with a look at the finds and the area’s historical development.

The layout of the ancient settlement can also be understood through specific architectural features: Veleia developed on a system of sloping terraces. The forum was built on an artificial platform created through extensive earthworks. The basilica housed twelve large statues made of Luni marble, depicting members of the Julio-Claudian family. The terraces, platform and statues offer different points of reference if you are interested in Veleia’s layout and furnishings.

Rustigazzo’s ancient name was Rus Titi Cassi. The village probably expanded after the nearby ancient city of Veleia was abandoned. The old Church of Santa Maria Assunta is also part of the village’s history: it was initially a suffragan church of the Val Tolla monastery and later of the parish church of Macinesso. Castello di Rustigazzo still stands in the main square. These sites differ from the Roman archaeological area and offer a broader perspective on the history of the village itself.

Routes and activities

The Marcia delle Terre Veleiate is a non-competitive recreational event that has been organised for everyone since 2013. Its route starts and finishes next to the archaeological excavations of Veleia Romana. There are three distances to choose from: 6, 12 and 18 kilometres. This makes it easy to take the length of the route into account when planning. If you would like to include the Marcia in your travel plans, check the dates in advance.

For a different kind of tour, the official Veleia route first follows the provincial road to Veleia and then continues to LocalitĂ  Rustigazzo; from there, it returns to the valley floor of the Chero. The route offers the opportunity to visit the archaeological site of Veleia Romana, where the Tabula Alimentaria Traianea was found. Its sequence of Veleia and Rustigazzo, followed by the return to the Chero Valley, gives the route a clear geographical progression.

Monte Moria: woods, trails and cycling route

Various route options in Monte Moria Provincial Park start in Rustigazzo. Trees cover three-quarters of the park; its landscape is characterised by sweet chestnut groves with centuries-old trees. Wildlife is also part of the scenery: the undergrowth is home to wild boar, badgers, roe deer, foxes and squirrels, as well as buzzards, woodpeckers and sparrowhawks. The trails and descriptions of the woodland appeal to different interests, from walking to nature watching.

The “Pedalando in Val d’Arda – percorso n. 3” cycling route leads to Parco Monte Moria. It follows the sequence Veleia Romana–Rustigazzo–Croce dei Segni–Veleia Romana. The park is an extensive woodland area with meadows, beech forests, coniferous forests and orchards. The cycling route and the trails that start in the village are two different ways to include a focus on the landscape in your travel plans.

Regional flavours

Local specialities can also be found across the wider area. In the Alta Val d’Arda, people eat Chisolini with coarse-grained salami, Coppa and Pancetta. Anolini in broth from the Val d’Arda are distinguished by their filling: it is made with cheese rather than braised meat. These regional dishes complement the cultural and scenic themes without tying them to specific places in Rustigazzo.
