Rivergaro: Trebbia, Architecture and Ciclovia
Accommodation in Rivergaro
Rivergaro is a small town in the lower Val Trebbia, on the right bank of the river of the same name. Here, the plain gives way to the narrowing valley. If you are looking for a hotel in Rivergaro, these different highlights can help guide your travel plans: riverside scenery, architectural heritage and the Ciclovia del Trebbia.
Riverside landscape and cycle route
The Trebbia Regional River Park protects about 30 km of the river of the same name, from Rivergaro to its mouth at the Po. The Ciclovia del Trebbia connects Piacenza with Rivergaro along a circular route of about 50 km. These two distances refer to different things: a protected stretch of river and a circular route, respectively.
The Ciclovia reaches Rivergaro at a riverside area with a pedestrian zone. There are play areas, places to stop for refreshments, a fountain and Pro Loco premises. To find your way along the cycle route, it helps to know both its approximate total length and the specific arrival point in Rivergaro. By contrast, the river park covers the longer protected stretch of the Trebbia as far as the Po.
Buildings and traces of history
The Santuario della Madonna delle Grazie stands above Rivergaro’s square, on the ruins of the former castle. A path from there leads to the Fontanino della Madonna. During the factional conflicts, Rivergaro’s former castle served as a refuge for Ghibelline lords and nobles.
Castello di Montechiaro has a freestanding keep in the middle of its courtyard; its layout follows the shape of the hill. This describes two different aspects of the building: the tower’s position in the courtyard and the way the layout adapts to the terrain.
The oldest written records of the Oratorio di San Rocco date from Bishop Castelli’s pastoral visit in 1579. In 1613, it was rebuilt on the site of an earlier religious building. The two dates therefore mark different events: the earliest written records and the later reconstruction. The parish church of Sant’Agata was built in the early years of the 19th century.
Local produce and seasonal events
In Rivergaro and the surrounding area, you can sample typical local products bearing the DOP, DOC and IGP designations along the Strada dei Vini e dei Sapori Piacentini. This offers a culinary way to discover Rivergaro and its surroundings, alongside the river and its architectural heritage.
The Grill Contest is one of Rivergaro’s established events and takes place in the penultimate week of April. The Festa Madonna del Castello is also an established event; it takes place on the second Sunday in September. The Festa dello Striccio is a local food festival held in late June. These events are spread across the calendar, from April through late June to September. If you want to plan your trip around a particular festival, check the date for the relevant year.
