Ponte Dell'olio combines a hilly landscape shaped by waterways with distinctive buildings and marked outdoor routes. The town lies between the Nure River and the Riglio stream. Monte Santo reaches 677 meters and is the highest point in the hills around Ponte Dell'olio. This gives you two distinct areas to focus on when planning your trip: the architecture of historic buildings and getting oriented among the outdoor activities on offer.

Architectural history

The Fornaci di Ponte dell’Olio connect the town's industrial history with distinctive structural features. The complex was built from 1890 onward for the continuous production of building lime for the company Calce Val Nure. The complex has been owned by the municipality for more than a decade; today, it houses the three surviving kilns. Its structural elements include exterior stone walls, metal reinforcing rings, an insulating layer of sand, and interior walls made of firebricks. The Fornaci thus offer a focus in their own right, alongside the medieval buildings. If you are planning a visit, check visitor access in advance.

For Castello di Riva, two dates should be distinguished: it was first mentioned in 1199, while the current building dates from 1277. Its floor plan is approximately an isosceles triangle. The structure includes a square keep and a loggia connecting the keep to a northern tower.

The Chiesa di San Giacomo was rebuilt in 1272. Castello di Folignano offers an architectural contrast: it has a square floor plan and four round towers at the corners. The two castles can therefore be compared by their floor plans: approximately triangular at Riva, square at Folignano.

Hilly landscape and routes

There are three mountain bike routes in the municipality, with downloadable maps and GPS tracks available. The routes are marked with signs and arrows. The signs give the route name, distance, difficulty level, duration, and route map; they also indicate the location of each sign. To help narrow down your options, you can compare distance, difficulty level, and duration. Check the downloadable files before setting out.

A larger network of 560 kilometers of marked trails starts in Ponte Dell'olio and runs through Ponte Dell'olio, Bettola, Farini, and Ferriere. It is described as the largest outdoor sports area and can be explored on foot, on horseback, or by mountain bike. The three mountain bike routes refer to the municipality, whereas the 560 kilometers refer to a trail network spanning several towns. The figures therefore cover different scopes: three municipal mountain bike routes compared with a multi-town network with a stated total length.

The Ponte Dell'olio area is also part of the Strada dei Vini e dei Sapori dei Colli Piacentini. This regional route complements the local trails and buildings with another geographic reference for planning your trip.
