Discover Modigliana
Accommodation in Modigliana
Modigliana lies in the Tramazzo Valley. The Rocca dei Conti Guidi is the town’s main attraction and offers impressive views over the valley. Art, local history and trails are other defining aspects of a visit. If you’re looking for a hotel in Modigliana, these different highlights can help you plan your days.
Art, Architecture and Local History
The Palazzo Pretorio dates back to the 14th century. The building initially belonged to the Guidi counts; from 1377, it was the seat of the podestĂ , or chief magistrate. The Pinacoteca Silvestro Lega has its own history: Michele Campana donated the first collection of paintings to the municipality in 1959, and the permanent collection opened in 1999. It includes an important collection of Italian art from the 19th and 20th centuries. Works by Silvestro Lega, who was born in Modigliana in 1826, are also on display.
At the Feste dell’800, living pictures, known as tableaux vivants, based on Lega’s works are recreated in detail with numerous participants. The Museo Civico Don Giovanni Verità offers a different perspective on history. It is located in the home of Don Giovanni Verità , who gave Giuseppe Garibaldi shelter there in August 1849. The original layout of the 19th-century bourgeois home has been preserved. The art gallery, festival format and museum therefore offer different perspectives: painting, the staging of artworks and a historically significant home.
Trails Through Landscape and History
A 2021 description lists nine circular Sentieri Agrourbani trails that start in the town centre and include various subsections. Together, they cover more than 180 kilometres. Each route has its own theme and story; the sights along the way relate to history, nature and gastronomy. The routes are GPS-mapped and can be downloaded from the project website. Check trail conditions before setting out.
The Costa Ceparano route crosses little-known ridges, through badlands and gorse-covered landscapes, with views of the sea and the horizon. It is suitable for cycling; conditions on the route may change. The Falesia di Ceparano was once a large sea cliff. Fossils of prehistoric marine animals can still be found there. The trails thus offer a range of highlights: themed circular walks, a cycling route with scenic views and a site with a geological past.
The Montebello experimental nature reserve offers an easy walk through a forest botanical garden suitable for families. As trail conditions can change, it is a good idea to check them before your visit. The Cerchio Dantesco is a loop shaped like a figure eight and follows a section of the route Dante took between Florence and Ravenna. At Passo del Monte Trebbio, a small roadside garden is home to the Monumento al ciclista and two plaques installed by cycling clubs that initiated the project.
Events and Regional Flavours
The Sagra Sangiovese in Festa is held every year on the fourth Sunday in April. The programme includes wine tastings with traditional dishes, as well as events about the history of the Sangiovese grape variety. If you’d like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the year in question.
Other events focus on different products and communal activities. At Non solo Kiwi, bakeries from the area offer pastries made with local kiwi, along with kiwi-based cocktails and long drinks made with kiwi products. At the Zoc ed Nadel, participants can gather around the fire and cook meat and vegetables on the grills provided. Together, these events showcase different aspects of the calendar: wine and the history of the grape variety, kiwi products and communal cooking.
