Discover Meldola: Art, History and Silk-Making Tradition
Accommodation in Meldola
If you’re looking for a hotel in Meldola, you can plan your stay around the town’s cultural attractions: religious buildings and art, the Rocca di Meldola, or the local silk-making tradition. When planning, it’s worth considering not only the different highlights of each place, but also the conditions for visiting. At some attractions, visits are guided, information is available by phone, or appointments must be made in advance.
A Historical Guide to Meldola
The Ronco River runs right alongside Meldola’s historic centre. The Teatro A. Dragoni is also in the historic centre, next to Piazza F. Orsini; its origins date back more than three centuries. At the regional level, Meldola lies at the beginning of the Bidente Valley, on the road leading from the Forlì area towards the Apennines. These details offer orientation at two scales: in the historic centre, with its river and theatre, and at the entrance to the Bidente Valley.
The Rocca di Meldola has been documented since the 11th century; its exact year of construction is unknown. It is partially open to visitors during opening periods, and events are held there in the summer season. If the Rocca is one of your priorities, plan your visit during its limited opening hours and check which period is suitable.
Art and Religious History
The Oratorio della Confraternita delle Santissime Stimmate di San Francesco was founded in 1632. It houses a painting of the Madonna and Child with Saint Francis by Francesco Caccianiga (1700–1781), a painter from Milan. To arrange a guided visit to the Oratorio, you can book by emailing patrimoniostoricoeartistico@auslromagna.it.
The Chiesa del Santissimo Crocifisso o dell’Ospedale di Meldola offers a different artistic focus. It is decorated with a cycle of paintings depicting episodes from the Passion of Jesus, completed over more than 15 years by 1508. The health collection associated with Meldola can also be seen there. The site therefore brings together a range of themes, from the Passion cycle to a collection connected with healthcare.
Silk-Making Tradition and Nature Reserve
The Museo del baco da seta “C. Ronchi” explores Meldola’s three-hundred-year local silk-making tradition. If you’d like to include this in your plans, note the special visiting requirement: call to ask whether the museum is open and what its opening hours are.
The Bosco di Scardavilla nature reserve offers a different perspective. Established in 1991, it covers about 30 hectares. The development of the natural landscape is monitored there, and knowledge of its flora and fauna is deepened. Visits are possible only by appointment with the reserve management. You also need a permit, which must be collected from the museum management at the town hall. Both an appointment and a permit are therefore required to prepare for a visit.
Events and Visit Planning
On the last weekend in August, the “Roccambolesca” event is held in Meldola as part of the celebration honouring the Blessed Virgin del Popolo, the town’s co-patroness. Several Meldola volunteer associations take part. Visitors are taken on a guided tour of the Rocca di Meldola, where works by photographers, sculptors and painters are exhibited. If this event is important to your stay, plan around the date given above.
Preparation depends on your destination: you can book a guided visit to the Oratorio by email, check the silk museum’s opening hours by phone, and make an appointment and obtain a permit for Bosco di Scardavilla. The Rocca, meanwhile, can only be visited during its opening periods. This lets you include art, history and nature in your travel plans in accordance with each place’s visiting requirements.
