Discover Bondeno: Canals, Museums and History
Accommodation in Bondeno
Canals and Early Settlement
Bondeno combines a distinctive waterscape with evidence of very different historical periods. The Burana Canal is the most significant canal in Bondeno’s dense network of canals. Archaeological investigations in the municipality have documented a Neolithic settlement at the former Fornace Grandi. These offer two distinct perspectives: the canal network shapes how Bondeno is situated in the landscape, while the archaeological site points to an early chapter in the history of settlement. For a trip planned around cultural interests, this brings together the landscape and early settlement.
Buildings and Historic Landmarks
Among the notable landmarks is the Rocca Possente di Stellata on the right bank of the Po; it is one of Bondeno’s symbols. The Rocca was built around the year 1000; in 1362, the Este family expanded and reinforced the complex. The date “around the year 1000” is approximate, while 1362 refers to the year of the works. The Chiesa Arcipretale, also known as the Duomo di Bondeno, is likewise considered a symbol of the Matildic area. At the Rocca, the focus is on its historical phases of construction; at the church, on its symbolic significance for the Matildic area.
The Casa Museo “La Casa del Pittore – Archivio Carlo Tassi” is among the institutions recognized under the designation “Case e studi delle persone illustri dell’Emilia-Romagna” (Homes and Studios of Distinguished People of Emilia-Romagna). Visits take place accompanied by a member of the house’s staff. Check the arrangements for visits before your trip.
Museums with Different Focuses
The Museo Civico Archeologico “G. Ferraresi” offers educational programs on archaeology and the past for primary and secondary schools. These topics can be considered alongside the Neolithic settlement at the former Fornace Grandi. The Museo della Moto “Glorie Italiane” di Scortichino is housed in a former primary school building and displays dozens, if not hundreds, of motorcycles that have shaped the history of two-wheeled transport. The building reflects its former use as a school, while the collection places the motorcycle at the center as a historic object. Together, the archaeology education programs and the motorcycle history collection offer different ways of exploring the past.
Religious Tradition and Market in Stellata
The Santuario della Madonna della Pioppa in Ospitale grew out of a wayside shrine erected in 1680. The sanctuary is associated with an apparition of the Madonna to a girl who was deaf and mute. This religious tradition offers a different historical perspective from the archaeological investigations and the history of the Rocca’s construction.
The Mercatino dell'Antiquariato e dell'usato di Stellata takes place on the second Sunday of every month and includes tastings of typical local products. Check the event date before your trip. The monthly schedule gives the market a specific date, while the tastings are another part of the market experience.
