Medicina offers several themes to consider when planning a trip: a wildlife sanctuary, churches with distinctive architecture and interiors, a historic clock tower, and a radio telescope. If you are looking for a hotel in Medicina, you can first decide whether nature, architecture, history or science should shape your stay. The sights give each of these interests a tangible focus.

Nature in Medicina

The “Il Quadrone” Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1985 by the Province of Bologna. It lies within the municipality of Medicina, near the hamlet of Buda, on land belonging to the LACME agricultural cooperative. The wetland comprises a depression, a riverside wood, a wet meadow and a wooded area. Together, these habitats form a varied mosaic and provide an important refuge for numerous animal and plant species. For travellers interested in landscapes and wildlife, the natural environment is the main attraction here.

Churches and architectural history

The Chiesa del Crocifisso was designed by Torreggiani around 1748; in the following years, it was built at the request of the old and widely established Confraternita dell’Assunta. It is a centrally planned building organised around a central space, with an octagonal drum and a lantern at the top. Both its ground plan and its upper section are therefore relevant to its architectural classification, while the design and subsequent construction represent two separate stages in its building history.

The Chiesa dell’Osservanza was built in 1731 and formed part of the Convento dei Frati dell’Osservanza. Its magnificent interior features valuable paintings, altars and finely crafted 18th-century stucco decorations. Its emphasis differs from that of the Crocifisso: at the Osservanza, the interior furnishings and connection to the convent take centre stage, while the Crocifisso is distinguished by its central plan, drum and lantern. The two churches can thus be compared by their different features, rather than by their dates of origin alone.

Tower and science

The Torre dell’orologio brings together two historical periods. Its lower section was built in the 16th century at the corner of the former Palazzo del Podestà. The large clock face dates from the 17th century, was made from majolica components from Faenza, and is considered the only known work of its kind. The dates refer to different elements of the tower: its lower section and the clock face made later.

The “Croce del Nord” radio telescope also broadens the picture of Medicina to include science and technology. It is one of the largest transit radio telescopes in the world, representing a scientific perspective alongside the natural environment and architectural history. The traditional Antica Fiera di Luglio Medicipolla puts the “Cipolla di Medicina” and typical regional culinary specialities in the spotlight.
