Marzabotto brings together archaeological history, the memory of the 1944 massacre and hikes along the Memorial Route. Kainua, the Sacrario di Marzabotto and the parish church of San Lorenzo di Panico each offer a different focus; the landscape and flora of the Parco Storico Regionale di Monte Sole are also part of the picture. When planning your trip, you can consider these themes separately: from the Etruscan city layout to memorial sites and a specifically described hike.

Kainua and the Etruscan city layout

The Etruscan city of Kainua was founded around 500 BC on Pian di Misano and the hill of Misanello, in the area of today’s municipality of Marzabotto. Kainua preserves a fully intact urban layout, with houses, workshops, and sacred and funerary areas. This arrangement makes the site interesting as a coherent urban structure: residential and working areas stand alongside religious and burial areas, rather than the focus being solely on a single building.

Two large temples dedicated to Tinia and Uni are located in the northeastern part of the city. Both are among the most important deities in the Etruscan pantheon. Their number, location and dedications give you specific points of reference for understanding the sacred area within the urban layout. Marzabotto was important for its connections with the Tyrrhenian region.

Memorial sites and history

Many of the victims of the massacre are buried at the Sacrario di Marzabotto. The Memorial Route passes through places in Marzabotto, Monzuno and Grizzana associated with the 1944 massacre and the history of the “Stella Rossa” partisan brigade. The Sacrario and the route represent different forms of remembrance: a burial site and a hiking route through several municipalities connected with this history.

Planning the Memorial Route

The Memorial Route is 20.5 kilometres long, is classified as difficulty level E (hiking trail) and has an estimated walking time of around seven hours. A 6-kilometre variant to Murazze follows an out-and-back route. The different distances help you estimate how much time your hike will take; the approximate seven-hour duration applies to the 20.5-kilometre route. Check the route details locally for any changes.

Church architecture and nature

The parish church of San Lorenzo di Panico is a Romanesque church dating from the 12th century. Its elaborately ornamented chancel apse is a particularly distinctive feature. This offers an architectural focus of its own alongside Kainua’s ancient urban structures: here the focus is on Romanesque church architecture, not Etruscan city planning.

The Parco Storico Regionale di Monte Sole is home to around 936 species of flora. This approximate figure conveys the botanical diversity of the area and complements its historical themes with a focus on the landscape.

Getting around and travelling to Marzabotto

The Centro di Interpretazione di Monte Sole has three rooms with information panels, audio and video materials, and a multimedia table. The different media offer a range of ways to explore the information. The Centro is located in the Casa della Cultura e della Memoria in Marzabotto, next to the town’s tourist information point.

Marzabotto railway station is on the Bologna–Porretta–Pistoia railway line. If you plan to travel by train, check the current timetable before you set off. Together with the location of the Centro and the route described above, the rail connection provides a useful point of reference for planning your visit to Marzabotto.
