For a stay in San Cipriano Picentino, several distinct themes are worth exploring: the civic museum, the architectural and artistic history of its churches, Montevetrano, and the municipality’s tourist routes. The places and route descriptions below vary in focus—from Roman finds to olive groves, old ovens, and wine cellars.

Museum and Church Architecture

The Museo civico di San Cipriano Picentino is located in the Palazzo delle Culture e della Cittadinanza Umanitaria on Via Roma. Its archaeological section displays Imperial Roman finds from a 2nd-century AD villa rustica on Via Pozzilli. These finds are also connected with the archaeological excavations at the Chiesa Madre. The historical and archival section features a selection of documents from the valuable collection of the municipal library and the Benedetto Croce municipal historical archive.

The present-day Chiesa Madre di San Cipriano Vescovo e Martire was completed around 1754. Its single-nave layout is flanked by side chapels; it also has a false transept with two chapels and a large semicircular apse. Archaeological traces of various building phases can be seen beneath the dome, under a transparent protective structure. The side chapels contain numerous wooden statues from the 16th and 17th centuries. The church’s layout, exposed archaeological traces, and sculptures reveal several layers of artistic and architectural history.

The Chiesa di Sant’Eustachio is documented from 1309 and has a three-nave basilica layout. During restoration work between 1998 and 2010, a 16th-century fresco cycle was uncovered there; it survives in a fragmentary and incomplete state. The church stands on the eastern slopes of Monte Monna, also known as Cerreta, at an elevation of 450 metres above sea level.

Montevetrano and the Landscape

Castello di Montevetrano stands in Campigliano on a green, terraced rise with olive groves and natural vegetation. The ruins have a square ground plan, with a cylindrical keep at the centre. It is visible from several points across an area of about 30 square kilometres. Historically, Montevetrano first served as an observation and defensive point for the Salerno area through its tower, and later through the entire defensive system.

San Cipriano Picentino sits on a hill at the eastern foot of Monte Monna. Vignale, Pezzano, Filetta, and Campigliano have the character of old hamlets and farmsteads set in a landscape rich in vegetation, ideal for nature excursions. The municipal area also includes the Special Area of Conservation (SAC) IT8050027 Monte Mai e Monte Monna and the Special Protection Area (SPA) IT8040021 Monti Picentini.

Routes with Different Themes

Six tourist routes have been established in San Cipriano Picentino: the Sentiero delle Nocciole, the Sentiero di Vignale, the Sentiero di Don Benedetto, the Sentiero di Messer Jacopo, the Itinerario dell’olio, and the Itinerario del vino e del pane. The Sentiero delle Nocciole passes through twelve municipalities linked by the IGP designation for Tonda di Giffoni hazelnuts. The Itinerario dell’olio runs through extensive olive groves in the municipal area and offers views of olive-growing areas whose olives have DOP status.

The Itinerario del vino e del pane runs between Pezzano and Filetta, passing historic farmsteads, old ovens for baking bread and pizza, and wine cellars. On Il Cammino dei Picentini, the first stage runs from San Mango Piemonte to San Cipriano Picentino; the second runs from San Cipriano Picentino to Giffoni Valle Piana, in the hamlet of Santa Maria di Carbonara. The north–south route along the S.P. 26 and S.P. 71 runs from the town centre through the municipal area, via Pezzano-Filetta, to Campigliano.
