Montecorvino Rovella brings together a complex architectural history, religious traditions, hiking trails and astronomical events. This offers a range of interests to consider when choosing your destination: churches and the castle, religious events or a trip to the Monti Picentini. If you are looking for a hotel, consider which of these themes you would like to shape your stay.

You can take these details into account separately when planning your journey by road or rail. Check your route or connection before setting off.

Castle, cathedral and churches through the centuries

Castello Nebulano was probably built around the 6th century AD. The path to the castle passes rock paintings, water springs and old washing places. The Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Casale Castiuli was built in 1487.

The Cathedral of SS. Apostoli Pietro e Paolo was built in 1274 on the ruins of the Abbey of S. Simeone, which had been destroyed by fire in 1137. After being closed for 22 years, the cathedral reopened in March 2002. The central nave contains a painting by Angelo Mozzillo from 1803, depicting Saint Peter receiving the keys to Paradise. The building’s history and the painting mark distinct periods, from the medieval predecessor building to the early 19th-century artwork.

The Carmelite convent of Santa Sofia was founded in 1656 by order of Diana del Giudice. Sant’Ambrogio alla Rienna is dated to the period from the 9th to the 8th century and is considered a secluded Romanesque church. The Church of San Lazzaro, which overlooks Casale Cornea, dates from the 17th century. Some authors describe its portal as a trophy from the Holy Land.

Sanctuary and religious traditions

The Santuario di Maria SS. dell'Eterno was built in 1623 in the wooded hills of Bosco Toppole. The sanctuary contains a grotto where the discovery took place. In May, the sanctuary is the destination of ongoing pilgrimages; the Virgin’s feast in the hamlet is celebrated on the third Sunday in August. If you would like to plan your trip around the feast, check the dates for the relevant year.

A route description updated on 16 May 2024 leads to the sanctuary via the former S.R. 164 and the Maccaronera-Pezze road. Check the route before travelling.

Trails and observatory

An older hiking trail description follows Sentiero 105 from the town of Montecorvino Rovella along the southern foothills of the Monti Picentini into the central part of the massif at Monte Accellica. It ends at Valico delle Croci di Acerno, the main historic route connecting to the Avellino side. Before setting off, check the trail conditions and signage.

The Osservatorio Astronomico „Gian Camillo Gloriosi“ was built in 1986 at the foot of Monte Nebulano and holds international scientific events each year. If an event is important to your travel plans, check the programme for the relevant year.
