Gioi is located in the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park. As a travel destination, the town has several distinct facets: a viewpoint on the remains of an ancient fortress, visible architectural monuments and trails with named destinations. When looking for a hotel, you can use these highlights to decide whether architecture and local history, landscapes, hiking routes or a local pasta tradition will shape your trip most.

Views and Landscapes Around Gioi

The “Il Castello” municipal park is situated on the remains of the ancient fortress. From there, the view extends across the surrounding Cilento landscape, northwest from the island of Capri to the far tip of Capo Palinuro in the southwest. The view thus takes in landmarks in different directions and connects the fortress ruins with a wide panorama of the landscape.

The use of the surrounding land also shapes the area: olives and grapevines are the main crops. A large part of the area, divided into small fields, is used for gardening. Thus, in addition to views across the landscape, agricultural land is one of the described features of the surroundings.

Castle Ruins, Walls and Historic Buildings

The visible ruins of Gioi Castle are attributed both to the Norman-Swabian period of the 12th and 13th centuries and to the Angevin period of the 13th and 14th centuries. Large, well-preserved sections of the fortification wall remain. Its polygonal course is interrupted by round, truncated-cone-shaped and square towers, dating from alterations made between the 13th and 15th centuries. The wall’s layout and the different tower shapes give the fortification a clearly recognizable architectural form.

The Convento di San Francesco was founded by the Franciscan order in the 15th century. It lies outside the walls along a passage that was necessary for access to the town. The monastery is therefore spatially connected to the entrance to Gioi. Another architectural detail is La Porta dei Leoni: the portal is made of sandstone and limestone and has two fluted steles and two lion sculptures mounted on the base.

Two Trails with Different Destinations

The Sentiero della Seta leads from Gioi to Stio and is suitable for hiking and trekking. Along the trail are grazing and forest areas, as well as centuries-old sweet chestnut groves. Its description links the route between the two towns with several types of landscape that alternate along the way.

The Sentiero della contemplazione begins in the town of Gioi; its starting point is near Località San Paolo. The trail leads to the hamlet of Cardile and the medieval “Ponte degli abbracci” bridge. Along the Sentiero, visitors can also admire the characteristic “Fiumarella” waterfalls. When comparing the two routes, their destinations offer a clear point of reference: the Sentiero della Seta is associated with Stio and landscapes of grazing land, forest and chestnut groves, while the Sentiero della contemplazione is associated with Cardile, the bridge and the waterfalls.

Local Traditions and Cultural Perspectives

Fusillo di Gioi is an elongated, strictly handmade pasta, 12 to 15 centimeters long. To shape it, the dough is wrapped around an iron rod with a square cross-section. Its length, handmade preparation and special tool make the process very specific and distinguish fusillo as a local pasta tradition in its own right.

MIG Mamei pursues a theoretical and experience-based research project. Its aim is to bring art, crafts, architecture and landscape together as a unified cultural product. This approach combines different cultural fields and adds another perspective on Gioi to the historic buildings and landscape themes described here.
