Discover Auletta: Culture, Nature and Tradition
Accommodation in Auletta
Auletta combines architectural and church history with traditional crafts, regional products and nature trails. When planning your trip, you can choose from different areas of focus: put historic buildings and works of art at the center of your visit, take regional products and traditions into account, or plan visits to natural sites. The following topics show how these perspectives differ and what you can use to guide your search for accommodation in Auletta.
History, Art and MIdA
The Castello Marchesale stands in the upper part of the historic center. It dates from the 12th century and took on its present architectural form in the 15th century. These dates point to two phases: the castle’s origins and the later development of its present layout. The Torre Campanaria provides another architectural connection: the bell tower in the historic center was originally part of the old Chiesa di San Nicola di Mira. The church belonged to a monastery built in the 14th century by friars of the Ordine di San Francesco della Scarpa.
The Chiesa Santa Maria delle Grazie houses a wooden statue of Maria SS delle Grazie, acquired in 1811. The Ponte della Difesa marks a different period: the bridge, which is Roman in origin, retains remains of two of its original arches. The castle, church and monastery connections, wooden statue and Roman bridge offer different cultural and historical perspectives on Auletta.
MIdA adds a nature-focused dimension. The integrated museum system connects nature with models for sharing knowledge. MIdA’s institutional headquarters are in the Palazzo Monumentale Jesus on Via Rivellino in Auletta. This adds a nature-focused approach to interpretation alongside the historic buildings.
Crafts, Regional Products and Festival
Auletta’s traditional crafts include embroidery, cotton crocheting and wool knitting. Olive oil production is also an important tradition, linked to the climatic conditions and the favorable qualities of the soil. Another regional product is the Slow Food product Carciofo bianco di Pertosa. It is produced in Auletta, Caggiano, Pertosa and Salvitelle, so its geographic connection extends beyond a single municipality.
Each year, Festival Bianco Tanagro features a long weekend centered on the artichoke of the Tanagro area. The program includes food “taverns,” culinary discussions, cooking shows, itineraries and folk music. The local product and the range of event formats are both featured. If you are considering the festival as a reason for your trip, check the specific event dates for your travel period.
Nature Sites and Trails
Auletta is one of the municipalities in the Parco Nazionale del Cilento, Vallo di Diano e Alburni. The Sentiero su Serra S. Giacomo is a hill trail with a picnic area and viewpoints. The Pineta in Largo Braida is a green space equipped for visitors. A nature trail also runs along the Fiume Tanagro in Contrada Ponte and includes a picnic area. The three descriptions have different focuses: viewpoints along the hill trail, an equipped green space and a riverside trail offer different points of reference for planning your time outdoors.
