Pompei: Archaeology and Marian Devotion
Accommodation in Pompei
In Pompei, archaeological exhibitions, garden design and Marian devotion can be explored as distinct cultural themes. When looking for a hotel in Pompei, this range of themes can help you tailor your stay to your interests. The examples differ in what they draw your attention to: a historical period, specific remains, landscaped waterways or religious art.
Exhibitions with different focuses
Since 25 January 2021, the Antiquarium has housed a permanent exhibition tracing the history of Pompei from the Samnite period in the 4th century BC to the eruption in 79 AD. The exhibition thus spans a long period of history and ends at a clearly dated point. The Palestra Grande also houses a permanent exhibition, but its subject is different: it is devoted to casts and organic remains from Pompei. The two permanent exhibitions therefore have different focuses: the passage of time at the Antiquarium, and casts and organic remains at the Palestra Grande. Comparing these places lets you focus either on history as a sequence of events or on the remains on display.
A closer look at individual places
At the Orto dei Fuggiaschi, casts of 13 victims are visible in a protective glass case. The number and form of the display make this a specific point of interest for anyone interested in the casts. The garden of the Casa di Octavius Quartio offers a different perspective: it has two artificial waterways set at right angles to each other, as well as cascades and fountains. The alignment of the waterways gives the grounds a geometric structure, while cascades and fountains add further water features to the design. Here, the focus is not an exhibition but the specific layout of a garden.
Opening hours and route
The Villa dei Misteri is listed as open from 9:15 am to 6:30 pm, with last entry at 6:15 pm. Entry therefore ends 15 minutes before the stated closing time. Opening hours may change, so check them before your visit. Another specific point of reference is the accessible route “Pompei per tutti”, which can be accessed from Piazza Anfiteatro. If you include this route in your plans, Piazza Anfiteatro gives you a named starting point.
The Santuario and Marian devotion
The Pontificio Santuario della Beata Vergine del Santo Rosario di Pompei is one of Italy’s most important centres of Marian devotion. Its origins are linked to Bartolo Longo, who initiated religious and social activities from the Valle di Pompei. The main altar features the Madonna di Pompei, a 17th-century canvas from the school of Luca Giordano. The Santuario therefore offers a different focus from the archaeological exhibitions: Marian devotion, the origins of the shrine and a specific named work of art are at its heart.
Pompei as a UNESCO World Heritage site
Pompei, together with Herculaneum and Oplontis, is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. This designation adds a shared cultural heritage dimension to the individual themes visitors can explore. When planning your trip, you can distinguish between Pompei’s different perspectives: historical development and remains in the exhibitions, the garden design at the Casa di Octavius Quartio, or religious art in the Santuario.
