For planning a trip to Pimonte, the landscape, culture and local tastings offer a range of different highlights. Monte Pendolo and the Monti Lattari represent the area’s natural appeal; churches, the castle and medieval sites tell the story of the town. Olive oil, wine and milk, in turn, shape distinct experiences centred on local products.

Scenery and Views in the Monti Lattari

Croce Monte Pendolo lies at an altitude of 618 metres in the heart of the Monti Lattari. From there, the view extends towards the islands of Ischia and Procida and across the landscapes of the Campi Flegrei and the coast. The viewpoint brings together mountain scenery and far-reaching vistas, making it a good focus for a day in Pimonte.

The geology also gives the surrounding area a distinctive character: the Monti Lattari consist mainly of limestone and dolomite. Karst features found there include sinkholes and caves, as well as surface erosion. Much of the area has retained a high degree of naturalness. A survey from the 1980s recorded around 850 native or naturalised species or units; around five per cent were identified as endemic. These figures refer to that survey at the time.

Trails with Different Destinations

The Sentiero Belvedere di Monte Pendolo starts in the centre of Pimonte, near the municipal information point. The Pino Zappino CAI 332B trail, by contrast, is defined by its route and specific waypoints: it connects the hill of Pino, at an altitude of 575 metres, with the outskirts of Pimonte. At Guado, 450 metres from the starting point, there is a cave with a statue of the Madonna.

Other trails lead to different named destinations. Le Tese di Pimonte CAI 334 leads to the church of the Beata Maria Vergine Immacolata parish in the hamlet of Tralia. The Sentiero del Monte San Michele offers views of the Conca di Pimonte, the Piana del Sarno and Mount Vesuvius. The Sentiero della Valle Lavatoio runs through the Valle Lavatoio and joins trail 332 shortly before the ruined chapel of San Giacomo. These details distinguish the trails by their stated routes, destinations and views.

Churches, Medieval Sites and Feast Days

In Pino stands the Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie, whose history dates back to 1317. Castrum Pini is a medieval complex hidden in the vegetation of the Monti Lattari. Castello di Belvedere was built in the 10th century as part of a larger defensive project by the Republic of Amalfi. Today, it hosts outdoor events, including lyric concerts and folkloric performances.

The Church of San Michele Arcangelo is also associated with a historical detail: a wooden sculpture of Christ that was recovered had originally stood on its pulpit, until the 1980 earthquake. When planning the cultural focus of a trip, you can therefore choose between architectural and local history, medieval sites, and outdoor events.

The Feast of San Michele Arcangelo is celebrated every year on 29 September. The festivities include traditional processions, religious services and cultural activities. Specific programmes may vary; if you would like to plan your trip around the feast, check the dates and programme in advance.

Tastings and Local Products

The Olive Oil Experience includes a walk through the centuries-old olive groves on Monte Pendolo and a visit to an oil mill, where you can observe the production process. The tasting includes EVO oil from Pimonte, local bread and traditional products. The Wine Experience offers a different focus: together with staff from local farms, visitors explore vineyards and terraces in the Monti Lattari; the experience ends with a tasting of local wines and typical products from Pimonte’s culinary tradition.

During the Milk Experience, you can take part in production stages ranging from the coagulation of milk to the stretching of mozzarella, and taste fresh products. The experiences thus differ in subject and format: olive groves and the oil mill are at the heart of the olive oil experience, vineyards and terraces of the wine experience, and the processing of milk and mozzarella of the Milk Experience.
