Colli di Fontanelle is located in the highest part of Sant’Agnello and offers views of the Gulf of Naples. At the same time, the village has preserved its rural character, historically shaped by agriculture. For planning your trip, Colli di Fontanelle brings together landscape and local history: you can focus on its elevated setting, hiking trails or social hub. If you’re looking for a hotel, it helps to decide in advance which of these aspects you want to shape your stay.

Social Hub and Local History

Piazza Carlo Sagristani is the social center of Colli di Fontanelle. As a community hub, it gives the neighborhood a specific point of reference beyond its landscapes. For visitors who want to get to know the village through more than its hikes and views, this square is one of the key landmarks. The neighborhood’s name also points to its history. Historically, “cuónti” referred to local devices used for hunting quail; “fontanelle” refers to natural springs that once shaped the area and made it fertile and lush. The name’s history links past hunting and the landscape of springs to a place whose rural character has been preserved to this day.

Hiking Trails from Colli di Fontanelle

One route from Colli di Fontanelle follows Sentiero 300 of the Alta Via dei Monti Lattari and reaches the Malacoccola headland. Another trail leads from the Belvedere near the main square of Rione Colli di Fontanelle to Punta Sant’Elia. The different starting points and destinations help distinguish the route descriptions: Sentiero 300 leads to Malacoccola, while the trail from the Belvedere leads to Punta Sant’Elia.

The Alta Via also runs from Colli di Fontanelle via the junction at Punta Sant’Elia to the so-called Torre di Sant’Elia; the route described passes through private property. Take this into account when planning, and check local trail conditions before setting out.

Coastal Views and Vegetation

The trail to Punta Sant’Elia offers a view of Li Galli, also known as the Siren Archipelago. It also reveals much of the coastline facing the Amalfi Coast. Colli di Fontanelle itself offers views of the Gulf of Naples. For planning your trip, these can be understood as different perspectives: the coastal view along the trail to Punta Sant’Elia, and the view of the gulf from Colli di Fontanelle.

The trail passes through chestnut woods and through a garrigue rich in seasonal flowers, scents and colors. The chestnut woods and garrigue give the trail description distinct landscape features; the profusion of blossoms is part of its seasonal character. If you choose a route in part for its vegetation, this is a separate consideration alongside views of the coast and islands. The seasonal flowers, scents and colors make the vegetation part of the travel experience, changing with the time of year.

Getting There and Preparing

One described driving route goes from Vico Equense via the SS145 to Piano di Sorrento, then via the SS163 and back onto the SS145 to Colli di Fontanelle. Check the current route and road conditions before setting out. A tour description from October 2020 states that there is no drinking water along the route described and recommends at least two liters of water per person. If you plan to take this route, allow for the recommended amount of water and check local trail conditions before setting out.
