Grottola is the locality where the municipal seat of Marzano Appio is located. If you are looking for a hotel in Grottola, you can consider different priorities when choosing your destination: historic architecture, church art, volcanic landscapes, or a hike to the Santuario della Madonna dei Lattani. Several cultural sites are located within the municipality of Marzano Appio; the landscape and trail themes described here offer additional perspectives.

Settlement and Landscape of Marzano Appio

Marzano Appio lies on the northeastern slope of the Roccamonfina volcano, amid dense chestnut forests. The settlement extends partly along the crest of a hill and partly on the summit of a small rise. The municipal seat is in Località Grottola. The name Grottola and the wider landscape of Marzano Appio therefore represent different points of reference: the seat of the municipality on the one hand, and the ridges and forests on the other.

Castle, Church, and Frescoes

The Castello di Terracorpo stands within the municipality of Marzano Appio. Its rectangular ground plan describes the layout, while its present appearance has the character of a Renaissance palace. This reveals two distinct aspects of its architecture: the clear form of the ground plan and the building’s Renaissance appearance.

The Chiesa dell'Annunziata is also located within the municipality of Marzano Appio. Its façade features a rose window. After suffering severe war damage, the church was rebuilt and reopened for worship in 1956. The façade detail and the history of its reconstruction offer different points of reference if you are interested in the area’s architecture and history.

Another art highlight is in Località Valle Cupa, in the Cappella di Santa Maria del Carmine. It contains 15th-century frescoes, including a Madonna and Child with a distinct Umbrian cultural influence. The image combines a religious subject with a clearly identified regional artistic influence.

Lake delle Corree and Its Formation

Lago delle Corree is of volcanic origin and is one of the crater lakes that collect water after volcanic activity ceases. It lies along the Casilina road, has a distinctive cone shape, and is nestled among granite rocks. Its formation explains its classification as a crater lake; its conical shape and rocky surroundings give the landscape a distinctive, visible character. The lake thus offers a different way to experience the area than its historic buildings: here, geology and landforms take center stage.

Hike to the Santuario della Madonna dei Lattani

A CAI route description dated November 5, 2017, gives the starting point for a hike to the Santuario della Madonna dei Lattani as Località Grottola. The trail passes through the medieval village of Terracorpo. From the higher part of Terracorpo, the view extends as far as Vesuvius. A CAI trail description for the Santuario mentions the MIBACT-CAI red-and-white trail markers for the onward route from a trail junction. The hike described therefore includes Terracorpo and its viewpoint as well as the Santuario. Since the route description dates from 2017, check the current route before setting out on a specific hike.

The Fiera di San Giacomo

The Fiera di San Giacomo takes place on July 25 and 26. King Charles of Anjou of Naples established it in 1299.
