Discover Annunziata’s History and Architectural Heritage
Accommodation in Annunziata
Explore Annunziata through tangible evidence of its history and architectural heritage, as well as a described walking route. If you are choosing a destination based on historic buildings, rural everyday life and a possible hike, you will find a range of starting points here to help with your planning.
Church and historic architectural heritage
The Chiesa Ave Gratia Plena o dell’Annunziata was founded in the 16th century. Inside are frescoes dating from 1735. The bell tower of the Chiesa Ave Gratia Plena dell’Annunziata dates from the 17th century, is about 30 metres high and is made of grey tuff elements. The church thus brings together several historical periods: its foundation, the tower and the frescoes each belong to a different period.
The former Ospedale dell’Annunziata also has a historical record: it is mentioned as early as 1587. Annunziata’s architectural heritage also includes examples from the 18th century. These details broaden the picture beyond a single building, without assigning all the structures to the same period.
A historically distinct settlement centre
Annunziata is one of Castel Morrone’s historically distinct residential settlement centres. Castel Morrone has a linear, polycentric settlement structure, with Annunziata forming one of several distinct centres. The historic building stock in these residential settlement centres consists mainly of two-storey houses with external staircases, courtyards and pitched roofs. While the church brings a single sacred building into focus, these houses represent the centres’ traditional residential architecture.
A collection on rural everyday life
The Casa museo civiltĂ contadina is located at Via Altieri 52 in Annunziata. Its collection comprises more than 500 items, including tools, equipment and household objects associated with daily life, fieldwork, the processing of agricultural produce and small-scale subsistence crafts. Its focus is therefore on everyday life and work: the objects do not represent a single building, but different activities and aspects of rural life.
This offers a clear distinction to consider when planning your trip: the church provides insight into sacred architectural history and interior decoration, while the collection focuses on objects from daily life and work. Both topics complement the historic houses, without describing the same aspect of Annunziata.
Walk to Monte Castello
Another point to consider in your planning is the walk from Castel Morrone Town Hall to Monte Castello, described as easy. It starts at Piazza del Municipio in Contrada Annunziata, is about 2 km long, takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes, and has an elevation gain of 250 m. The distance, estimated time and elevation gain each answer different questions about planning your day, so don’t consider only the number of kilometres. Check the route conditions before setting off.
Depending on what interests you most on a trip, the historic buildings, the collection on rural everyday life or the described route may be the deciding factor. This makes it possible to get a sense of Annunziata through specific themes before searching for a hotel for your stay.
