If you’d like to get to know a destination through its architectural history, churches and distinctive local features, Vallata offers several different points of interest. Sacred architecture, a former castle villa, a viewpoint and a stone spring each provide a different focus for planning your trip. There are also two religious traditions with different dates: the procession on 16 August and a reenactment during Holy Week.

Churches and Historic Buildings

The Chiesa di San Vito has a façade made entirely of exposed natural stone. The entrance portal of the Chiesa di San Rocco bears the date 1800. The Chiesa di S. Bartolomeo Apostolo was built in the Middle Ages. These details range from a distinctive façade material and a dated portal to the age of a church. The history of the Chiesa di San Rocco can also be placed in its local setting: it was built where Piazza San Rocco stands today.

Villa Tullio Cataldo was once the castle of Vallata. Originally, it consisted of three wings arranged in a horseshoe shape. The villa also had a wood-fired oven where bread was prepared and baked for the town on feast days. The arrangement of the wings and the oven’s former use offer two different insights into the building: its original form and a feast-day tradition for the town.

Views and Local Landscape

Belvedere di San Rocco is a piazza at an elevation of about 900 metres above sea level. From there, you can see Monte Santo Stefano and the Ufita Valley. Fontana delle Festole offers a different setting: it is an old stone spring on the slopes of Monte Santo Stefano and can be reached on foot from the town centre. This gives you a named viewpoint and a spring accessible on foot as two different places to visit.

The Ufita River is also a geographical point of reference for Vallata: it flows through the municipal area. An artificial lake was created in the hamlet of Iazzano. These places add further geographical points of interest to the buildings and piazzas, without needing to combine them into a single route.

Religious Traditions Throughout the Year

Every year on 16 August, the statue of San Rocco is carried in a procession through the streets of Vallata. The event “Il Giovedì e Venerdì Santo di Vallata” includes a reenactment of Christ’s arrest, followed by a procession lit by torches. These two traditions offer different reasons to plan a trip: a procession held on the same date each year and an event during Holy Week.

If you’d like to plan your trip around one of these traditions, choose the right time to visit. For the Holy Week event, it’s a good idea to check the specific dates and schedule in advance.
